Ms. Sotero is my mentor and is also the leader of the Parent and Community
Engagement Committee. She is the only other Spanish-speaking teacher on campus,
and as such, we both are constantly looked to for translation, parent meetings, etc.
Her interactions with our parents are similar to mine. However, she has found it
Shirley Sotero difficult recruiting parents to attend our PTO meetings. Consistent parent involvement
has been an issue at our school, which is why we decided to try to establish a PTO.
Carina Gonzalez
Ms. Gonzalez is our school psychologist, and last year, she began hosting parent classes
where she taught them strategies in how to deal with teenage behavior. She had about
15 parents attend her first class, however, only 1-3 parents continued to attend her
classes after that. She was able to give me some insight as to how to best reach out to
parents.

presentation, notes, handouts, and other resources.
Areas of improvement: Handout could be less bulky and more parent-
friendly. Didn’t use the handout because presentation was virtual, but
handout could be improved for next academic year.
Strengths: Elizabeth addressed adults that were motivated to learn more
about how they can be involved on campus activities. The parents that attend
Coffee with the Principal are parents that want to be kept in the loop. With
this in mind, Elizabeth created a presentation that she knew would be of
interest to the parents. She engaged them by asking them questions that

be motivated to join the PTO.

Areas of improvement: For the next presentation I suggest that she give
parents examples of the types of activities they can be involved in and the
types of fundraisers the PTO wants to host.
Strengths: The topic that Elizabeth presented appealed to all parents because
she was talking about ways they can be involved on campus through the PTO.
