Grammar assignment

Grade: 1st grade

Subject: English Language Arts

Length of Lesson: 1 hour

Lesson Overview/Rationale: Students will strengthen their use of English


language by identifying and correcting the grammar mistakes presented on the
worksheet. Students will work in groups of four.

Curriculum Framework/Standard: Michigan K-12 Standards English


Language Arts:

“Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. a.


Recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word,
capitalization, ending punctuation)” (Page 15).

Learning Objectives:
● Students will be able to identify punctuational errors.
● Students will demonstrate what they’ve learned about punctuation and recognize
how it helps carry the precise meaning of a sentence.
● Students will be able to identify capitalization errors.
● Students will identify when to capitalize certain letters.

Technology Uses:
● The students will watch a video on the computer about capitalization and
punctuation before completing the activity.

Materials:
● Paper
● Pencil
● Access to a computer

Procedure:

● Teacher will open a video on the computer for the whole class to watch. Link-

● Students will get into groups of four
● Teacher will pass out a worksheet to each student. The worksheet will have four
sentences that have capitalization and punctuation errors that the students will
need to fix.
● Since there are four sentences total student 1 and 2 will fix the capitalization
errors on all four sentences while student 3 and 4 will correct the punctuational
errors on all four sentences.

Assessment:
● I checked for understanding during the activity by looking at their worksheets
and seeing if they have identified the capitalization and punctuational errors.
● The students will be evaluated on how well they truly understand grammar by
correcting the mistakes that are presented on the worksheet.
● Students will be graded on whether they’ve found the errors and corrected them.
