Culture mask project
Mask-making process

This picture shows all the material I used for my mask.

I started with tearing some newspapers. Then I used those newspaper strokes to glue them on the balloons
(paper mache).

I finished the paper mache, the balloons with newspaper strokes are drying.
The balloons with the newspaper strokes are dried and the balloons are away. Now I cut my mask, so it gets
the right shape.

The cutting part is finished, I glue the two part together to form one/the right shape.

I add the features (ears of cotton, horns of paper and eyes) of a rhino on my mask.
I paint my mask to sure it gets the colours of a rhino and to make the purpose clear.

I use (watercolour) pencils to make the structure of a rhino and to make the sad emotion (tear)

This is the result of my rhino mask. (you can zoom in if necessary)

Preparation mask

1. What will is the purpose of your mask? (Check To protect the endangered animals
out pp; sheet 3)

2. Explain your purpose. (e.g. If it is used to ‘hide’ With my purpose (to protect the endangered
then explain why hiding is necessary and what you animals) I hope to protect the endangered animals
hope to accomplish by hiding) +/- 100 words. from dying. Poachers can for example take away
ivory from elephants, rhino’s, etc. Lots of animals
die because of this. I want to show all the people
what poachers do and that we have to stop them.
Because if we don’t stop the poachers and don’t
protect the endangered animals, they die and
eventually there will be no animal of this species
left.
3. Where did you get your inspiration from? Please
post a picture and explain.

I got my inspiration by these pictures. On two of

these picture you see a mask, this is the shape I
want to use. To make the purpose clear I used the
lowest picture. For the emotion I used the picture in
the middle.

4. What features of the face will be exaggerated I’m making a rhino head (like above). I want to make
and why? +/- 100 words a horn from which a upper piece is broken (very
important feature). I add some blood to it to make it
clearer. By this the purpose of my mask will become
(very) clear. For my mask I will add a really sad (and
sad) emotion, because they are in pain (and they
have run a lot to avoid the poachers.)
5. What emotions will you try to convey? (=show) A sad (and tired) emotion, because their ivory is
E.g. taken away and they are in pain because of that.

6. What materials will you be using? I want to use: carton, paper, paper mache, paint,
glue, colour pencils, balloons.
7. What elements should I add to symbolise and I am going to use the colours gray, white, black, red
communicate the purpose and role of your (and maybe some other colours). These colours are
character? (E.g. Think about the meaning of colour; there, to make clear it is a rhino and to make details
shapes, symbols that you might use.) (like blood). I want to use mainly triangles and
circles for the shape of the mask.
