Chealsea vs liverpool
 struggled to provide any width as they had to contend with the threat of the Liverpool
wide players in transition
 We see this here with the attacking unit for Chelsea all positioned in a narrow group
in the centre. This positioning and the inability of the Chelsea fullbacks to really get
into advanced areas meant that Liverpool were able to comfortably retain a compact
block in their defensive phase. In their inability to access the wide areas a lot of
passes from Chelsea into the final third were forced and failed to allow the ball to
progress towards the Liverpool penalty area.

Chealse vs brighton
 the defensive performance has been so far their weakest link.
 Their attacks were done mostly through the wings, with different setups on each. On
the right wing, we saw some very interesting swaps in the positioning of Azpilicueta,
Barkley and Pedro. The last two interchangeably moved back closer to the defensive
line while Azpilicueta did forward runs looking to receive long balls by Pedro or
Barkley. The images below show a case where Pedro moved back to receive the ball
while the second showed Barkley doing the same, and in both cases with Azpilicueta
running forward.
 At the times of more intense pressure by Chelsea, he was usually the one dictating the
moment the collective pressure started, being the leader of such pressure. Without
Kante on his side, the physical demand was much larger for Jorginho.
 Although he was helped by the other midfielders, they don’t have the defensive
mindset found in the French international. See below how he crosses Chelsea’s
offensive line to pressure Brighton’s goalkeeper.

Lille vs chealsea
 meanwhile, Lampard once again converted his side to a 3-4-2-1 formation
 In possession, the players formed a passing block which consisted of two centre-backs and two central
midfielders. With at least four players involved in the build-up, they could circulate the ball easily even
when Chelsea started to press.
 up front, the three opponent attacking midfielders and the striker usually worked inside the central area
and occasionally changed position with each other. Because Chelsea’s defensive structure consisted of
two defensive lines, it created spaces in between and that was where the strikers worked. They were
flexible in picking out a position to receive short passes, while still capable of chasing long balls behind
Chelsea’s defensive line.

 Firstly, he wanted his side to put an emphasis on building their attacks from the
back. Christensen and Zouma were two centre-backs who were comfortable on the
ball and constantly involved in circulating the ball among the block. The same can be
said about César Azpilicueta as the Spanish defender also played a key role in
connecting the centre-backs with the likes of James or Kanté. Using his passing
ability, he could find the mentioned players in an active position and allowed them to
continue the team’s attack.
 On both flanks, Marcos Alonso and James stayed higher and positioned themselves
in the central area of the middle third. They must also be able to make overlaps and
support Willian and Mount in attacks. At the same time, their positioning must also
turn him into a possible passing option which allowed the centre-backs to distribute
wide against Lille’s pressure.
 To keep the three-man build-up in the second half, Jorginho from his role would drop deep and move in
between the central area of the passing block. He would create passing triangles with the defenders
and allowed them to circulate the ball more efficiently. If Lille increased their pressing intensity, Kanté
would join the Italian midfielder by staying on the same line as him.
 Up front, Mount operated in between the lines and occasionally moved away from the box when he was
off-the-ball. By doing so, he dragged along one of Lille defenders and created spaces behind his back.
Abraham also had the tendency of locating high up the pitch and attempted to beat the offside trap that
Lille set up on some occasions.
 In counter-attacking situations, the visitors used a different approach to find the wing-backs. After
winning possession back, they would create short combinations between the players to progress the
ball up the pitch. It gave Alonso and James more time to make an overlapping run and position
themselves in free space. Usually, those combinations took place on either flank and the ball carrier on
that side would find the wing-back on the opposite side through, again, a long pass.
 defensively, they formed a narrow 5-3-2 defensive structure with the aim of narrowing the space
between the lines and prevented Lille from reaching the 16-yard box. They also used a variation of it in
a 5-4-1 when Willian dropped deep from his position and pushed Mount out wide. Using two separate
defensive lines, they started the press inside the middle third and retreated in front of the goal.

 Usually, it was possible to notice the midfielders combined with the strikers to overload the
middle area. They attempted to lock the ball carrier down and forced him to make a back pass
or distribute wide. The second defensive line kept the distance between players a bit wider.
James and Alonso would occupy the half-spaces and track the runs of Araújo and Bamba.
They would also act as the focal point when the team shifted across the pitch and started to
press.

Southampton vs chealse

Chelsea have also recently brought in a new manager, with club legend Frank Lampard at the
helm after Maurizio Sarri left to go back to Serie A. Lampard was tasked with gaining back the
fans’ trust after Sarri’s playstyle left a sour taste in their mouth, and to get results despite a
transfer ban. A shaky start saw them perform well, but unable to win games. But now, with four
wins in all competitions in a row, Lampard has Chelsea in fifth place before the second
international break.

 Lampard on the other hand, stuck to his preferred 4-2-3-1

 The two banks of four allowed two scenarios to happen. The midfield four were so stretched
out, using the whole pitch, which limited Southampton’s use of the flanks. Mentioned above
was Southampton’s eagerness to use their left side to try and hurt Chelsea, and while they
were successful on some occasions, it kept Southampton very compact in the middle, which
made it easy for Chelsea to defend againt.
 he second scenario was when Chelsea were in the final third. The front four would attack as a
unit. It is rare for teams to have a front four, usually, there will only be two (a pair of strikers) or
three (a striker and two wingers) forwards on a team. Chelsea’s front four suffocated
Southampton’s backline, especially since Hassenhüttl tinkered with his formation, and set up in
a 4-3-3. 4v4 is not a situation you want your team to be in whilst in defence, as the advantage
is almost always with the attack.
 Chelsea’s right side of Azpilicueta and Willian often struggled to deal with the
overload on Southampton’s side. Azpilicueta especially struggled; he only
won 6/14 of his duels in the defensive third, and lost possession 22 times, more than
any other Chelsea player. There also seemed to be a lack of communication
between him and Zouma. Tomori also had a match to forget, losing
possession 19 times, and having two errors leading to shots from Southampton.
 Chelsea have only kept one clean sheet in all competitions since the
beginning of the season.  Lampard has started to consistently get his team to play
well going forward, and win games. He now has to focus on the defensive side of
things before it costs them.
 Chelsea, on the other hand, usually got back into a defensive shape quite quickly after
possession was overturned. Without possession, they defended in a 4-4-2 shape. The two
forward players, usually Abraham and one of Hudson-Odoi and Mount, would press the Ajax
player with the ball, hoping to force a mistake and allow their team to counter. The difference
between this press and the one Ajax was deploying is that Chelsea were doing it in their own
half. If the press did not work, Chelsea would relatively still not be under threat.

City vs chealsea

 he visitors matched their opponents in a dynamic 4-3-3 system. The usual suspects of N’golo
Kanté, Jorginho and Mateo Kovačić made up the midfield three. Under Frank Lampard, the
labels attached to these players have been relinquished as they now operate on a fluid
rotational axis. This system allows the single-pivot to alternate, making it easier to build-up play
through the phases. This, however, led to problems as a lack of clear designation occasionally
left Chelsea disorganised and easy to play through.
 The first stage of Chelsea’s tactics when out of possession started with an organised structure
being implemented in the form of a mid-block. The midfield three would push high, moving tight
onto Silva and De Bruyne. This was supported by the attacking three who situated themselves
narrow and close to the second line of press. As we can see above, this prevented Man City
from playing directly through the heart of the pitch, and if they did opt to do so, any recoveries
could be quickly turned into a counter-attack.
  a result, the home side funnelled possession into their full-backs. It was at this point where the
system deviated from being a containing structure and transformed into an aggressive high
press.
 Once the horizontal pass was played by the centre-back to the full-back, Chelsea triggered
their man-to-man press. Kovačić continued to be aggressive and pushed up onto Rodri in order
to force Man City backwards. This bold strategy saw immediate success as the away side took
the lead with a tidy Kanté finish. But as Man City have shown against other sides who have
ventured into the Etihad with an aggressive mindset, eventually, they will find gaps to exploit.
