Example 1
Engine cylinder of a motorcycle
To find
• The increase in heat transfer due to fins

• qt is the total heat transfer with fins


• qwo is the total heat transfer without fins
• Remember to find qwo, we will simply find heat
transfer from cylinder by simply using Newton’s law
of cooling i.e. qconv = hAs (Tb-T∞)
First lets find heat transfer from cylinder without fins

qwo = hAs,wo (Tb-T∞)

As,wo = 2𝜋𝑟1 𝐻

Tb-T∞ =𝜃𝑏
Now lets find total heat transfer from engine
cylinder with fins
• Now, in total heat transfer equation we have
all the values except for fin efficency 𝜂𝑓

• To find fin efficiency we use figure 3.20


• For fin efficiency we use the following figure
