NOMINAL MIX

CONCRETE BY DLBD
METHOD
For M-20 (1:1.5:3)

P PAL
DLBD Method to determine Material Requirement for Nominal
Concrete Mix
The DLBD (Dry Loose Bulk Densities) method is an accurate method to calculate
cement, sand and
aggregate for a given nominal mix concrete. For calculation, we consider a nominal
concrete mix
proportion of 1:1.5:3 (M20).

A. Calculated Volume of Materials Required:-

01 bag (50 kg) of cement = 35 Liters or 0.035 cum

Since we know the ratio of cement to sand (1:1.5) and cement to aggregate (1:3)

Volume of Sand required with respect to cement would be = (0.035 x 1.5) = 0.0525
cum

Volume of Aggregate required with respect to cement would be = (0.035 x 3) = 0.105

cum

B. Convert Volume Requirement to Weights:-

DLBD of Sand = 1600 kg/cum

DLBD of Aggregate = 1450 kg/cum

So, Sand required = (0.0525 x 1600) = 84 kg

Aggregate required = (0.105 x 1450) = 152.25 kg or say 152 kg

Considering W/C ratio of 0.40

So, water required = (50 x 0.40) = 20 kg

So, for M20 (1:1.5:3) Nominal Mix Concrete with regards 01 bag of cement –

Cement – 01 bag or 50 kg

Water – 20 kg

Sand – 84 kg

Aggregate – 152 kg

C. Calculate Material Requirement for Producing 1 cum Concrete:-

So, the weight of concrete produced with 1 bag of cement (50 kg) = (50+20+84+152)
kg = 306 kg.

Considering wet density of concrete = 2400 kg/cum

So, 1 bag cement and other ingredients can produce = (306/2400) = 0.1275 cum of
concrete 1:1.5:3

Finally, 1 cum of concrete will require

Cement = (50/0.1275) = 392.15 or say 392 kg

Water = (20/0.1275) = 156.86 or say 157 kg

Sand = (84/0.1275) = 658.82 kg or say 659 kg

Aggregate = (152/0.1275) = 1192.15 kg or say 1192 kg

If you use 20mm : 10mm = 60 : 40

Then, 20mm = (1192 x 0.60) = 715.2 kg or say 715 kg

10mm = (1192 x 0.40) = 476.80 kg or say 477 kg
