4 (Quarter & Eighth Accompaniment- HS Theory)


Essential Questions
How can you create accompaniments using quarter and eighth notes?

Context
High School Music Theory class is working on composition/arranging to work on part
writing. They will take simple melodies and arrange micro compositions for their
instrument/voice, students have been working on this project for a few weeks.

National Standards
MU:Cr3.2.C.Ia Share music through the use of notation, performance, or technology,
and demonstrate how the elements of music have been employed to realize expressive
Intent.
MU:Pr6.1.C.Ia Share live or recorded performances of works (both personal and
others’), and explain how the elements of music are used to convey intent.
MU:Re9.1.C.Ia Describe the effectiveness of the technical and expressive aspects of
selected music and performances, demonstrating understanding of fundamentals of
music theory.
MU:Cn10.0.Ia Demonstrate how interests, knowledge, and skills relate to personal
choices and intent when creating, performing, and responding to music.

Learning Outcomes
Students will arrange their own version of Arirang using quarter and eighth notes.
Students will notate using quarter and eighth notes.
Students will perform music with quarter and eighth notes.
Students will sight read quarter and eighth note notation.

Procedure
● As the students are walking into the classroom, begin playing an arrangement of
Arirang found at the YouTube link below.
● Pass out printed copies of Arirang, a Korean folk sound found at the bottom.
● Ask students to identify where Korea is located, pointing on the map.
● Play the piece on the piano for the class, making sure to explain that this is one
arrangement made for piano.
● Define quarter notes and eighth notes, asking students to draw them on the board.
● Ask the students to identify how many quarter and eighth notes can be found in ¾
meter.
● Explain to the students that they are creating an accompaniment for the top line of
the piece using quarter notes and eighth notes.
● Pass out the grading rubric for their assignment.
● Direct the students to break off into groups of two or three for 20-25 minutes to
arrange the piece into a duet or trio on personal or school provided equipment.
● Allow students to choose whether they would prefer to perform their arrangement
live for the class or record it and play the recording for the class.
● Hand out staff paper to each group to write their arrangements on.
● Allow the students to go to practice rooms/alternative spaces to work on their
arrangements.
● Check in with each group periodically to see how they are doing and assist them
with any questions.
● After 20-25 minutes, ask the students to come back to the classroom.
● Have each group perform their arrangement for the class either live or through a
recording.
● Provide written feedback to each group on their rubrics.
● Allow each group the opportunity to sight read each other's arrangements.
● Collect each group's arrangements for grading.

Assessment
Teacher will aurally assess students' arrangements from their performances, using the
rubric below for grading.
Teacher will assess students’ notation by collecting copies of their
arrangements by marking any errors in notation, not associated with point value.
Teacher will aurally assess students sight reading, using the 3-2-1 rubric.
o 3- student sight read with 1-2 errors.
o 2-student sight read with 3-4 errors.
o 1-student was unwilling to sight read.
Teacher will aurally assess students’ performance using the 3-2-1 rubric.
o 3-student made no errors
o 2-student had 1-2 errors
o 1-student had 3-4 errors

Glossary of Terms and Abbreviations


Arrangement- The selection and adaptation of a composition or parts of a composition to
instruments for which it was not originally designed or for some other use for which it
was not at first written.
Composition-1. Any musical work or production.
2. The act of compiling and inventing a piece of music.
Part Writing- The component of counterpoint that recognizes each voice as an individual,
horizontal melody rather than as a part of the resultant, vertical chords.

Extension
If time permits allow the students to work together in groups of 4 to arrange a quartet.
