Maize (Indian Corn) constitutes a

primary poultry feed ingredient. In India, major maize producing states are
Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Other states including Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra, and Orissa are producers of a smaller scale.

Corn is generally grown in two seasons. The first is Khariff, for which sowing starts in June and harvested October
onwards. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Orissa have Khariff crops. The second is Rabi,
for which sowing starts from December and harvested by March. Rabi crop is mainly grown in Bihar and coastal
Andhra Pradesh. In Tamil Nadu corn production starts from January and peaks by March. Corn may also be
produced in small quantities during other times of the year.

Corn has several uses. It is used in the poultry and animal feed industry, in starch and food industry, in breweries and
for human consumption. In the poultry feed industry, corn constitutes about 60% of the feed and hence is extremely a
significant raw material.

Suguna’s Corn Procurement Division, which embarked upon an ambitious program of centralized procurement of
maize in the year 2006-07, has succeeded in creating an efficient, dependable and viable system in Karnataka, Tamil
Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and is planning an expansion into Maharashtra in the coming season.

This system has procured about 700,000 metric tons of Corn in the last year which includes about 200,000 metric
tons stored with safe and scientific preservation techniques.

The main objectives of Suguna’s Corn Procurement Division are:

 To maintain an inventory for a minimum of seven days in all the feed mills across the country
 To create backward integration by directly procuring corn from the farmers at the farm gate
 To avoid middlemen and to provide a better return for the farmers
 To enhance quality standards by establishing uniform and consistent quality product
 It ensures transparent and fair practices and payment within stipulated time frames
 Not to discriminate against anyone, as in provide the same price to all on a given day

With this in view, this division expects to procure around 1,100,000 metric tons of corn out of which approximately
500,000 metric tons will be stored in the corn growing states.

Better management results in better productivity ! You could be an experienced farmer or venturing newly into the
poultry industry. But effective poultry management is essential for the overall development and health of the bird.
Suguna and its team of experts will help you throughout the relationship providing valuable guidance and
management tips.

While you are considering joining our successful family of farmers, we encourage you to read through some basics of
Broiler management.

Brooder Management
The overall broiler performance is dependent on several management practices. Brooder management is one of the
important aspects of broiler rearing and management. The early / developmental stage becomes critical for the
overall result and growth of the bird. Hence, care should be taken right from day one.

Following are the objectives for brooding management:

 To ensure strong growth progression from day-old through to 7 days

 To develop appetite and promote feather growth
 To achieve target bodyweight by 14 days / 2 weeks and maintain a smooth
curve through to 28 days / 4 weeks
 To maintain uniformity across the flock

Effective brooding management includes providing the chicks with the right temperature, relative humidity, air quality,
good quality feed and water. Key points in brooding management are:

 Clean, disinfect and fumigate the shed and equipment well before the arrival
of the chicks
 Check for the right temperature and humidity levels 24 hours prior to the
arrival of the birds
 Ensure chicks have immediate access to fresh water and feed
 Use chick behavior as an indicator of satisfactory temperature levels
 Replenish feed constantly during the brooding period
 Monitor and ensure chicks feeding by crop fill scores
These activities when followed collectively will result in good early development of skeletal size, immune system and
cardiovascular system and also improves appetite.

Grower & Finisher Management

The grower stage is between the 14th and 28th day of the birds life cycle. During this stage, the management
objectives are to help the birds develop their immune system, uniform growth, sexual maturity and production. The
important functions of this stage is grading of the birds on the basis of their weight, check and maintain body weight
on a weekly basis, feed and water management and vaccination. The birds above 28th day of age till lifting are
termed finisher.

Resource Requirements
The environment in which the birds are reared becomes critical for their performance. In addition, it would help if the
farm is located closer to the production and marketing centers. A farm that has access to good roads and easy
transportation has an added advantage.

While setting up a farm, there are a set of must have requirements to be adhered to.Below is a list of the
requisites to setting up a poultry farm:

 Water availability throughout the year. Water quality : Hardness below 750
ppm, pH 6.0 to 8.5
 Shed breadth should be 25 feet and shed floor should be at least 2 feet above
ground level
 E.B service, Tube light @ 1No for every 400 sq. ft, is essential
 Foot bath / dip with disinfectant for better bio – security
 Separate feed room near to the shed with stacking arrangement for feed bags
 Water tank - 2 Nos (One for medication and another for drinking water) with
capacity of 500 litres for every 1000 sq. ft
 Side Curtain for the entire length of the shed for both sides, inside and outside
 Partition for every 500 sq. ft
 Provision of death pit for disposal of dead birds

Soya bean is the single largest oilseed produced in the World. In India, Soya bean is purely a Kharif crop, for which
sowing begins by end of June with the arrival of south-west monsoon. The crop is usually ready for harvest by the
end of September and starts being sold in the market October onwards. Crushing for oil and soy meal starts in
October, reaching a peak over the next two or three months.

Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Bhopal and Mandsor in Madhya Pradesh, and Nagpur, Sangli in Maharashtra are the major
trading centers (spot markets) of Soya bean in India. Soya bean has been commercially utilized to produce edible oil
and animal feed. After oil extraction, the by-products of oil cake and meal are used in animal feed as an important
source of protein.

Soya bean meal

Soy meal is the world's most important vegetable protein feed source because of its high digestibility, high energy
content and consistency. It accounts for nearly 65 % of World Protein Feed Demand. About 98 percent of soy meal is
used as an animal feed ingredient.

Soya bean oil

Soya bean oil is a derivative of Soya bean. On crushing mature beans, oil and meal are obtained. While the oil is
mainly used for human consumption, meal serves as the main source of protein in animal feeds. Refined Soya bean
oil is increasingly gaining acceptance as the medium of cooking in India.

Suguna’s Soya processing plant

Suguna commenced its Soya operations in 2004 with the main objective of procuring high quality Soya meal for
Suguna’s feed mills across the country. Suguna procures high quality Soya seed, Soya meal and Soya oil from
Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. This Division’s ambitious program has succeeded in creating an efficient,
dependable and viable procurement system.

Suguna is authorized by the Government of Maharashtra to procure Soya seed, Soya meal and Soya oil directly from
the farmers. Besides Suguna, ITC is the only other company to have this license. Suguna invites Soya farmers to
bring their produce to the Suguna collection center where the supplies undergo a quality check and grading. The
price for the specific grade of Soya is fixed as per fair and transparent norms and communicated to the farmers.

This fixed price will be valid till the next day. Farmers are assured better returns as middlemen do not play any role at
all. The transparent process coupled with fair pricing and payment within stipulated time frame is another huge
advantage to the farmers. Suguna also carries out direct mandi purchases whereby traders deliver supplies directly to
the godown.

Suguna is setting up its own Soya processing plant at Nagpur with a capacity of 1000 tons per day for which it
requires 3.5 lakh tons of Soya per year

Suguna is committed to the highest levels of quality in raw materials and end products. Suguna’s quality assurance is
established in every step of the supply chain process. From procurement of raw materials, to following scientific and
good management practices in poultry rearing and processing to delivery of the end products.

Suguna’s Soya processing unit delivers the best quality Soya meal to the feed mills. This is possible by following
stringent quality standards in procurement of the raw materials. Suguna’s standards of Soya selection is known to be
the best in Indian poultry industry. With no compromise on quality, Suguna sources the best raw materials for the

Suguna believes in creating value for its stakeholders in everything that it does. Be it farmers, customers, traders,
employees, suppliers, partners or other institutions, Suguna ensures value addition in every transaction and
investment. Suguna makes a difference through processes, technology and people. Quality and innovation are core
values at Suguna. And Suguna creates value in several ways, benefiting countless number of people, particularly
farmers, traders, customers and employees.

Pioneering efforts by Suguna in contract farming has changed the landscape of the Indian poultry industry, and has
transformed the lives of lakhs of farmers and people across Rural India. Through poultry integration, Suguna provides
livelihood and assured income to thousands of farmers and also provides indirect employment, assuring a better
future to lakhs of rural households.
Suguna’s success lies in building strong and loyal relationships with the farmers who are more than simply an
extension of our value chain. We see them as partners, and we believe strongly in our vision of Energising Rural
India. Through the success of contract farming, Suguna has built up a strong and innovative business model which
cannot be replicated easily.

Seeing the impact of Suguna’s initiatives on rural development, Chief Ministers of other States such as Andhra
Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab and Jharkand have approached Suguna to set up operations in their states.

Suguna successfully reduced middlemen in the poultry chain from 14 to 4. Farmers deal only with the company, and
get assured returns. Suguna provides them all the inputs and in return, the farmers get a fixed growing charge which
can be increased through optimizing production cost.

Suguna also bears the production and market risks, thereby protecting the livelihoods of farmers. Regardless of the
market price, the farmers still get the assured growing charge, and incentives.

Suguna provides a lot of project guidance and assistance with getting finance, and provide farmers with continuous
technical training in scientific poultry management practices. In some areas, farmers approach Suguna with only land,
and we help them to put up a poultry farm, and then place our chicks and train the farmers to manage the birds. Our
line supervisors visit the farms every day to monitor the birds and to troubleshoot problems.

To service this massive base of 15000 farms, Suguna has invested in highly sophisticated technology and
infrastructure. With state of the art hatcheries, and an advanced R&D Centre, feedmills, veterinarians, scientists, and
professionals, farmers are assured of the best quality chicks, feed and professional care. Importantly, Suguna’s
scientists and employees train the farmers in GMP (Good Management Practices) too. Through all these, Suguna
brings tremendous value to the farmers who may otherwise be unable to have access to all these on their own.

The success of the contract farming model has encouraged Suguna to carry such innovative approaches to other
areas in backward integration, such as corn farming where Suguna practices ‘Contact Farming’. Experts from our
corn division encourage farmers to grow corn, explain the benefits and the know-how, and educate them in scientific
farming methods to help increase their yield. Suguna offers a buy back guarantee, so that the farmer gets a better
price for his crop. This way, Suguna procures 4 lakh tons of maize p.a. from farmers in Karnataka alone, which
equals to approximately 2.5 lakh cultivated acres, directly benefiting at least 50,000 farmers.

Through this direct procurement, Suguna also assures farmers fair prices and enormous savings by way of
transparent transactions and quick payments.

Suguna also indirectly adds value to rural farmers and suppliers in other ways, such as purchasing supplies and
providing direct and indirect employment. Suguna purchases raw materials worth more than Rs.1000 crores per year.
Suguna has a strong SCM (Supply-Chain Management) Division which constantly focuses on setting up direct
contact with small and medium manufacturers. It works with them to bring their standard on par with international
quality standards, and then sources raw materials from them. This focus ensures manufacturers get better prices for
their materials and Suguna gets better quality.
Suguna has a multifaceted and talented workforce that brings puts cutting-edge perspectives to practice. This 4,800-
strong employee base grows and prospers along with Suguna through endless opportunities for learning and self-
development that play major role in shaping the careers and lives of many people. Suguna’s vast infrastructure
provides employment to skilled and unskilled workers and professionals from urban, semi-urban and rural areas.
Suguna’s strong belief in promoting employees from within the organisation, has ensured good career succession
plans and growth opportunities for people with basic educational qualifications who have developed their skills and
knowledge on the job. Today, several people in the middle and senior management have risen from within the ranks.
Suguna also encourages employees’ children through special educational initiatives in the form of awards and
incentives.

Suguna celebrates 25 years of good health and great taste. Suguna’s focus on creating nutrition-enriched products
brings to the society, healthy and wholesome chicken adhering to international standards, and yet, affordably priced.
Not only just this, Suguna has also launched value added products that include value added eggs, hygienic chicken
retail stores, frozen chicken and ready to eat heat n eat home meal replacements. All backed by the Suguna promise

range is a new category of home meal replacements (HMR).

History
Managing Director Mr. B.Soundararajan and Joint Managing Director Mr. G.B.Sundararajan saw potential in
growing the Indian Poultry Industry through integration, which later came to be known as Contract Farming. This led
Suguna Poultry to pioneer contract farming in India.

In 1986, Mr. B.Soundararajan and Mr. G.B.Sundararajan set up a poultry farm with 200 layer birds at

Udumalpet. During 1989 - 90, when chicken prices crashed because of an over-supply of birds in the local market,
Suguna saw an opportunity for business growth by helping the poultry farmers who had bought feed and medicines
on credit and could not clear their dues. To help them recover their money, these visionaries began to provide feed
and health support to indebted farmers in return for the end product - eggs. The success of this exercise gave birth to
the Suguna Integration Model.

The poultry integration model has set a win-win situation for both the farmer and the integrator. Farmers are provided
with day-old chicks, feed and health support. Performance is monitored on a daily basis with Suguna field staff
visiting the farms to check on the health of the birds, feed intake, growth and mortality levels. In six weeks time, the
birds are weighed and are ready to be sold by Suguna. Farmers are paid a handsome growing charge for the birds at
the end of this period. Thus, Suguna takes this success model to the next level vision of energising rural India
benefiting the country, farmer and the company.

A constant and relentless drive has taken the company's growth and expansion which covers over 15,000 farmers
from 8,000 villages in 11 Indian states. Impressed by the model and its success, Suguna receives invitations from
many state governments to set up its operations. Many investors and delegates from across borders visit Suguna’s
facilities to study this model and later adopt in their own countries.

With mastery and success in contract farming, Suguna has shaped the poultry industry to its current position in India.
