    Rivers can change between liquid and solid states depending on temperature. As a liquid, the particles in water are separated and it can flow freely without a definite shape. However, when the temperature drops below freezing, the particles move closer together causing water to solidify into ice, taking on a rigid shape like other solids such as rocks. Therefore, it is possible for rivers to freeze over in winter and become solid sheets of ice that then melt back into liquid water as temperatures rise again.

    What is Matter?
    Rivers and Oceans: Liquid or Solid
    • Remember that Liquid and Solid are two different states of matter.
    Particles in liquids
    • In the Liquid State the particles are separated and that is why it can
    flow. This is the reason why liquids do not have a specific shape but
    the shape of its container.
    Particles in solids
    • In the Solid State the particles are very close together so they cannot
    move. Solid have a specific shape.
    Water + Temperature
    • Water can change from liquid to solid according to the temperature
    they are in.
    Frozen Rivers
    • Remember that temperature can cause the rivers change from liquid
    to solid.
