COSC 341: Project Step 1

Overview:
Our party planning app is aimed at event organizers as well as a public audience. The
app will ask the user the theme of the party, key things they want at the party (decorations,
activities, food, drink etc) and an expected number of guests. The app in turn gives an output to
the user. It will provide a list of materials needed, a budget, a list of tasks to complete and a
schedule. The user of the app can choose to post the event plan to social media or directly to
the app, so party-goers can view it.

Usability Criteria:

Effectiveness
○ Criteria: The app provides accurate information based on user input that matches
with what the user was intending.
Efficiency
○ Criteria: What the app asks the user is clear. There are minimal questions and
quick response times in order to plan a party quickly. There are not an
overwhelming number of options for each choice.
● Learnability
○ Criteria: The app makes options clear to the user and puts the questions in terms
that the user will understand. The functionality is intuitive and mirrors popular
apps, exploiting users previous knowledge.

User experience goals:

● Helpful: The app should function as a tool for event planners and public audiences alike,
to take the stress out of party planning and make it a satisfying and rewarding
experience, where the users can feel productive and accomplished.

● Enjoyable: Users should have minimal frustration, feel motivated to plan their party and
have fun doing it, in order to develop repeat users of the app.

John Matthews, 34, is a club owner in Toronto, Ontario. He frequently works with frustrating
event planners and he is tired of the stress that comes along with planning his events. He wants
to plan his own Halloween Fright Night Party at his club, PopOff. He travels frequently, and
doesn’t have a lot of time to plan a party. He has downloaded our app to hopefully plan a party
with ease and without the hassle of talking to event planners. He has average computer
experience.

Karen Thomas is a 42 year old single mom to three boys, living in California. She has been a
stay at home mom for 10 years, and does sales calls for a cosmetic company on the side. She
has no computer experience and she is trying to host the best party possible for her 8 year old
son Timothy. She used to be a part of a party planning group at her children’s elementary
school with other moms, but she found it very stressful and competitive. Her son, Andrew,
taught her how to download our app on her iPhone. She is ready to put all the moms at the
school to shame and plan the best party for her son.

Kelowna. He loves talking to people and going out with friends. He just became legal and is now
able to go to night clubs in his city. He has been having trouble finding events solely through
social media. He found our app and is hoping he can find more events that he is interested in.
He doesn’t like hosting parties but he likes attending them. He has average computer
experience.
