I.OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a) define what range is,
b) calculate the range of grouped data,
c) participate actively during discussion.

C. Discussion

Today, we will discuss about the range of group


data.

Artly, kindly read the definition of range. Range is simply the difference between the upper
class boundary of the top interval and the lower
class boundary of the bottom interval.

R = upper class boundary of the highest interval


– lower class boundary of the lowest
interval

Example 1: Solve for the range.


The scores of Grade – 8 students in Mathematics
– 8.

SOLUTION:
Upper class limit of the highest level
= 50
Upper class boundary of the highest class interval
= 50 + 0.5 = 50.5
Lower class limit of the of the lowest interval
= 21
Lower class boundary of the lowest interval
= 21 – 0.5 = 20.5

R = upper class boundary of the highest interval –


lower class boundary of the lowest interval
R = 50.5 – 20.5
R = 30
30 is the range score of Grade-8 students
in Mathematics-8.

Okay, in getting the upper class boundary of the
highest interval you add 0.5 to the highest score,
and also in getting the lower class boundary of
the lowest class interval you subtract 0.5 to the
lowest score.

Upper class limit of the highest level
= 45
Upper class boundary of the highest class interval
= 45 + 0.5 = 45.5
Lower class limit of the of the lowest interval

Lower class boundary of the lowest interval
= 11 – 0.5 = 10.5

R = upper class boundary of the highest interval –


lower class boundary of the lowest interval
R = 45.5 – 10.5
R = 35
35 is the range score of the Grade-10
students in the 4th year Periodic-Test in
Mathematics.
