Final oral assignment
English 2

In the following pages, the student will find the protocol which will be used in the subject of
English 2 for the oral assignment at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Cali, a comprehensive
collection of complete questions, and the criteria which will serve a guide for the evaluation and
assessment of the assignment. The exam lasts about 8 minutes max and has two (2) parts:

(1) Part 1Interview (3 minutes)

Each student will be asked basic questions about one of the topics studied in class such as family,
travelling, food, among others.

(2) Part 2 Asking questions (3 minutes)

Each student will ask one (1) question to their teacher about a particular topic given during the
test. The student will have 1 minute to prepare the question before asking. The teacher will then
answer and ask one question on the same topic to finish this part of the test.

SOME GENERAL ADVICE TO TELL THE STUDENTS BEFORE PRESENTING THE EXAM:

Keep it simple Try to avoid complicated explanations or grammar if you are not sure about them.
You should try to answer with simple words using the grammar expressions and vocabulary
studied in class.

Ask for explanations If you don’t understand what you have to do, you must ask the teacher to
explain. For example, you could use conversation strategies:

Could you repeat the question, please?


I’m sorry?
I'm sorry, did you say…?
Excuse me?
Excuse me, what did you say?
You say …what?

Use full sentences You must avoid answers which are single words or lists. Instead, use long
sentences to give your answers

Keep speaking If you need time to think about something, you must try to keep speaking rather
than remain silent. You could use conversation strategies such a:

Please give me a moment while I think about the answer

Now in this first part, I’d like to ask you some questions about yourself. Let’s talk about… [insert

PART 2

Now, you will ask me a question about a particular topic given. You will have 1 minute to prepare
the question before asking. And I will then answer and ask you a counter-question on the same
topic. Do you understand? Please use tenses different to present. Here’s some paper and a
pencil for you to write down your question.

Unit 1: The way we are
Objective: To Talk about people’s behavior and personality using manner adverbs and
adjectives

PART 1

 Who is someone you really admire? Describe his/her personality


 What do you have in common?
 How are you different?
 How would you describe your personality?
 Which habits do you find annoying or irritating in a classmate or relative?

TEST 2
Unit 2: Experiences

Objective: To talk about experiences and secret dreams using Present Perfect and adverbs of
attitude

PART 1

 What is something you you’ve always wanted to buy?


 What is a place you’ve never been to but would like to visit? Why haven’t you done them?
 What is something you’ve always wanted to learn how to do? What has stopped you?
 What is something else you’ve always wanted to do.

 What kind of things do you do on the weekend?


 What fun things have you done lately?
 What has been the most exciting experience you have ever had? Describe
 Which place, city or country have you ever wanted to visit? And why?
TEST 3
Unit 3: Wonders of the world

Objective: To be able to compare people, places or things. using superlative adjectives and
superlatives with nouns.

 Regarding the 7 wonders of the world, are there any you would add to the list? perhaps any human
made wonders?
 Where would you like to travel before you get old? Why?
 Is there a place you’d never visit? Where and why?
 What is the most interesting historical place that you have ever been to in your life? And why?
 What is best trip that you have ever taken? And why?
 What is the most beautiful place that you have ever seen?
 What is the most exciting thing that you have ever done on a trip?
 What was your worst trip?
 Are they any natural parks or features you would recommend?

TEST 4
Unit 4: Family life
Objective: To be able to talk and or describe family life using causative verbs
To describe family memories and to talk about things that happened in the past and don’t
happen now by using used to and would.

 Do you have a large family or a small family?


 What type of family do you have?
 Can you tell me something about your family members?
 What sorts of things do you like to do together?
 Did/Do you get on well with your family? [Why?]
 What are some things family members argue about? and why? “Can you give a good way to work it
out?
 What is your happiest childhood memory? Describe.

 What has changed since you were a kid? Why do you think that has changed?
TEST 5
Unit 5 Food choices

Objective: To Talk about food for example their eating habits, different ways of cooking,
Colombian dishes and use quantifiers and partitives such as few, many. Etc.

 What kinds of food do you like to eat?


 What kind of new food would you like to try? [Why?]
 What was the last meal you cooked or ate?
 Have you ever heard about or tried a well-known dish from another country?
 What are the most popular snacks in Colombia?
 Tell me about your favorite snack. (What does it have? How is it prepared?

Unit 6: Managing life
Objective: To talk about future plans and arrangements.
To give advice to overcome different situations.

 What are your plans for the future?


 What advice would you give to a person who is addicted to computer games
 What advice would you give to a person who has problems with a subject at university.
 What advice would you tell a friend who is always fighting with his/her boy/girlfriend
 What are your definite plans for the weekend?
 What are you doing after class today?

Unit 7: Relationships

Objective:
Interact with others about topics as friendships and relationship using compound
sentences, phrasal verbs and softeners

 How are your friends different from you?


 Who do you hang out with on weekends?
 What kind of people do you get along with best?
 Are you still friends with anyone you grew up with? Who?
 The last time you saw your friends, what did you do together?
 In what ways are your friends important to you?

Unit 8: What if?

Objective:
To be able to state hypothetical situations to provide advice to common life problems using
the expression: “ I wish ”and second conational

 What changes would you make to improve the way you come to university? [Why?]

 If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
 What would you suggest a visitor to see and do in your country?
 What traffic problems are there in your area? [Why?]
