12 Key Principles on Bhava Analysis: From Jataka Parijata

1. Importance of Hora-Shastra and Bhava-Phala

Jataka Parijata 11.1. Hora is the ornament

(alaṅkār) of the Jyotish Shastra. In the Janmakundali,
the auspicious results (or otherwise) are caused due to
the strength (and weaknesses) of the Grahas. Bhavas
that are ccupied or aspected by Venus, Mercury,
Jupiter, or the Bhavadhipati, but unconjoined or
unaspected by the rest, produce auspicious results.
Commentary:
1. Bhava-phala is the crown jewel of the Hora Shastra, the
science of astrology.
2. What is Hora Shastra? The ancient acharyas divided
Jyotish Shastra into 3 major parts, Samhita (such as Brhat
Samhita), Siddhanta (such as Surya Siddhant), and Hora (such
as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Brhat Jataka). Because of these
three division, Jyotish is also called Triskanda Jyotish.
3. Analysis of Bhava is chief among all analysis done in the
Jyotisha shastras.Samhita deals with mundane
astrology, Siddhanta deals withastronomical
computations and Hora deals with interpretation of the
Graha placements in the kundali. In Hora-shastra (the science
of interpretation of planetary influences), the Bhava analysis is of
prime importance.
4. There are many approach of Horoscope interpretation, chief
among them are, (1) focusing on individual grahas and
judging their placement in Rasis and Bhavas and their aspects
and yoga, (2) focusing on individual Bhavas and judging the
influences from the perspective of Grahas influencing the bhavas,
Bhava lord placement and various yogas happening in the bhava,
with the bhava lord or the Karaka. In my view the 2nd
approach is more air-tight and comprehensive as all the
matters of life are covered by one of the Bhavas and it
offers a better structured approach of horoscope
interpretation.
5. Saumya Grahas or the natural benefics are the
Jupiter, Venus, strong-Moon (strong in paksha bala) and
well associated Mercury. It is known that conjunction or aspect
of the Saumya Grahas cause the Bhava to bestow auspicious
results pertaining to the Bhava significations. However, the author
only mentions 3 among the 4 saumya grahas and Moon is left out.
There are other classics such as Jaimini Sutra only mentions about
Jupiter and Mercury. Influence of Venus and Moon is usually
doubtful. One may note that Jupiter and Mercury attains
Dikbala in Lagna while Venus and Moon attain Dikbala in
the 4th house.
6. What happens when the Saumya Graha is a functional
malefic by ownership? In my opinion, all matters in life has two
important aspects, the effort and outcome, the path and the
destination. I think the natural signification indicate the path
taken by the native (easy or difficult path) while the functional
nature indicate the destination.
7. Often we see that after following an benevolent path,
the outcome is insignificant. On the other hand, following a
difficult path, the gain is tremendous. Under the influence of a
natural Benefic and functional malefic, the effort may appear
benevolent (sugar coated), but the outcome is not going to
benefit the native. On the other hand, when a natural malefic
becomes functional Benefic, the native achieves grand success
after following a path of great pain, trials and tribulations.
8. Another interpretation is that, the natural
signification affect the nature of the native (in a specific
matter ruled by Bhava), while the functional signification
indicate, what is achieved in that matter of life. If a Saumya
Graha- Functional malefic is placed in Bhava, the native will not
gain much from that Bhava, in-spite of having a great attitude
and benevolent behavior.
9. Now an important question is what is more important,
the path or the destination? Well, this depends on the
individual's perspectives in life.

2. Prosperity of a Bhava
तन्वादिभावेषु शभ
ु ोदयेषु तद्भावनाथोपगतेक्षितेष।ु
तदक्
ु तभावस्य समद्धि
ृ रुक्ता नपापखेटेक्षितसंयुतेषु॥ २॥

tadbhāvanāthopagatekṣiteṣu |
taduktabhāvasya samṛddhiruktā
napāpakheṭekṣitasaṁyuteṣu || 2||

Jataka Parijata 11.2. When the Bhavas, starting

from the Tanu Bhava (Lagna) are conjoined with or
aspected by Subha Grahas, or their respective Lords,
they  prosper (samriddhi). Also, they should not be
conjoined or aspected by Papa Graha.
Commentary:
1. Here, the Saumya and Krura Grahas are refered to as
Shubha and Papa Grahas. The Subha grahas are Jupiter,
Venus, well associated Mercury, and Moon with strong
Paksha-Bala.
2. A bhava gains materially and financially properity
(Samriddhi) when the Bhava is conjoined or aspected by
(1) Shubha Grahas, (2) Lord of the Bhava.
3. Nothing has been said about the conjunction, aspect or other
association of Bhava Karaka here.

4. The Bhava declines in material and financial prosperity,

when the Bhava is aspected by natural malefics, with the
exception of the Bhava lord.

5. What happens when the natural malefic is a

yogakaraka, a friendly planet to the Bhava lord or the
Karaka of the Bhava? For instance what happens when Saturn
aspects the 8th house? Or what happens when Saturn is placed in
Libra or aspects Libra? Or Mars is placed or aspects Capricorn?
Will the same dictum prevail?
6. In real life, we will hardly see a horoscope having
either benefic or malefic influences. Usually it is combined
influence. Thus, if both Benefic and malefic Grahas influence a
Bhava, the results should be judged based on the rule of
proportion i.e., if predominating influence is that of benefic Graha,
the prosperity will outweigh the difficulties and vice-versa.

3. Destruction (Nasha) of Bhava
नीचस्थो रिपुराशिस्थः खेटो भावविनाशकः।
मल
ू स्वतुङ्गमित्रस्थो भाववद्धि
ृ करो भवेत ्॥ ३॥
nīcastho ripurāśisthaḥ kheṭo bhāvavināśakaḥ |
mūlasvatuṅgamitrastho bhāvavṛddhikaro
bhavet || 3||

Jataka Parijata 11.3. When a planet is placed

in debility (Neecha) or anInimical sign
(Ripu-Rashi), the bhava is spoilt while placement of
the planet
inMulatrikona, Svakshetra, Exaltation orFrie
ndly sign the Bhava prospers.
Commentary:
1. Whether the bhava where the planet is placed is
affected or the bhava lorded by the planet is affected? The
author did not explicitly mentioned that.
2. If we consider this as continuation of the previous verse,
then we can interpret this as, when the Shubha Grahas who are
supposed to confer auspicious results by their bhava placement
or aspect, they will do so, when they are placed in Mulatrikona,
Svakshetra, Exaltation or friendly sign.

3. If the Subha grahas are placed in Debility or Inimical sign,

they will instead cause destruction to the bhava in which they are
placed or aspect. From this, we can infer that when a Subha
graha is ill placed in a sign, it becomes a Krura Graha. What
causes the transformation? Placement in debility and inimical sign
is akin to Tamas Guna, while placement in strength in exaltation
etc.is akin to Sattva Guna. Hence, the auspiciousness of the
Subha graha are stemmed out of the fact that they are endowed
with higher proportion of Sattva Guna. When they are placed in
their places of weakness, they become inauspicious as their level
of Sattva Guna falls and Tamas Guna increases.

4. From our experience, we see that when a Graha is afflicted,

then both the bhava it owns and the one where it is placed are
affected.
5. Similarly, when a planet is comfortably placed in places such
as Mulatrikona, exaltation etc., it promotes the bhava it owns as
well as the bhava it is placed.

6. For instance, when for Leo lagna, 6th and 7th lord

Saturn is placed in Aries in the 9th house which is its sign of
debilitation, it will not only spoil the 6th and 7th bhava that it
owns, but also the 9th bhava where it is placed. Similarly if Saturn
is placed in the 3rd bhava in Libra, it will promote all the Bhavas,
viz., 6th, 7th and 3rd.
7. This principle is based on the Deeptadi Avastha of the
Grahas.

8. Similarly a planet prospers the bhava it aspects, if the bhava

is owned by the planet, happens to be its Mulatrikona,
Svakshetra, Exaltation sign or its friendly sign. On the contrary if
the bhava happens to be the sign of debility or inimical sign, the
aspect of the Graha will damage the bhava, specifically if the
planet is a natural malefic.

9. Aspect of natural benefics on a bhava always promote

the bhava however the extent of that depends in the order
of, Exaltation > Mulatrikona > Own sign > Friendly sign >
Neutral sign > Inimical sign > Debilitation.
10. Natural benefics (Shubha Grahas) never damage the
bhava it aspects unless it is afflicted due to conjunction
with a malefic (Papa Grahas). The auspicious results are even
more enhanced if the Graha is in its exaltation, mulatrikona etc.
Placement of the natural Benefic (Shubha Graha) in debilitation or
inimical sign curtails its ability to bestow auspicious results.

4. Bhavanatha's placement in a Dusthana
यद्भावनाथो रिपुरिष्फरन्ध्रे दःु स्थानपो तद्भवनस्थित॥।
तद्भावनाशं कथयन्ति तज्ज्ञाः शुभग्रहे ण॥४॥

yadbhāvanātho ripuriṣpharandhre
duḥsthānapo tadbhavanasthita|||
tadbhāvanāśaṁ kathayanti tajjñāḥ
śubhagraheṇa ||4||

Jataka Parijata 11.4. The bhava whose lord is

placed in a Dusthana is adversely affected. Similarly
when Dusthana lords are placed in a bhava that
bhava suffers destruction (nasha). The adverse affect
is Nullified if the bhava is aspected by Shubha Grahas.
Commentary:
1. Among the dusthanas, 6th Bhava signifies diseases, battles,
litigation; 8th Bhava signifies weaknesses (nija dosa) and
the 12th Bhava signifies losses.
2. When these Dusthana lords are placed in a bhava or a bhava
lord is placed in these dusthanas, the bhava suffers destruction
due to the significations of the Dusthana.

3. Similarly, when a bhava lord conjoins any Dusthans lord, the

bhava suffers destruction, especially when the said bhava lord is
also devoid of strength, being placed in debility or in an inimical
sign.

4. Strong Shubha Grahas are great antidote to any evil

in an horoscope. So when they aspect the Bhava or the Bhava
lord, as the case may be, they protect the Bhava from
destruction.
5. In such cases, the Bhava suffers only during the
malefic dasa and antardasa, of the Grahas which is causing
the destruction. For instance, during the dasa-antar of the
Dusthana lords or "Dusthana lord & enemy of the Bhava
lord", the Bhava suffers destruction. At other times, the Bhava is
protected by the Subha Grahas.

5. Prosperity of the Bhava due to the Strength of the
Bhavanatha
yadbhāvape kendragate vilagnāttrikoṇage vā
yadi saumyadṛṣṭe |
tuṅgādivargopagate balāḍhye tadbhāvapuṣṭiṁ
phalamāhurāryāḥ || 5||

Jataka Parijata 11.5. Whichever bhava lord is

placed in the Kendra or in the Trikona from the Lagna
or aspected by the Saumya Grahas (or Mercury?) or
placed in exaltation etc. (Tungadi) vargas or
otherwise strong (balāḍhye), that bhava gains
strength (Bhava Pushti) and bestow outstanding
results (phalamāhurāryāḥ).
Commentary:
1. While the 6th-8th-12th are known as Dusthanas, the Kendras
and Trikonas are the Suthanas (auspicious places).

2. Kendra stands for Action, Goals in life and Success in

endeavors. On the other hand, Trikona stands for
Blessings and financial reward, which are due to the merit
accumulated in past life
3. When a Bhava lord is placed in a Kendra, the Bhava
attains strength to protect the significations of the
Bhava. However, the native needs to put right effort to attain
success in the Bhava significations. The auspicious results will not
flow on its own. The Native will be inspired to put right effort if the
Lagna lord has good relationship with the Bhava lord, else, the
person will shy away from performing any action.
4. On the other hand when a Bhava lord is placed in a
Trikona, the Bhava is blessed by Goddess Laxmi and the
person can attain prosperity without putting much
effort. It is as if, the native is given the auspicious results in a
platter. Good circumstances will arise spontaneously through
which the native gains.
5. It is not enough to have a Bhava lord placed in a  Good
Bhava; they need to be well placed in the sign in good avastha. In
my opinion, results due to sign placement significantly
outweighs the results arising out of Bhava placement. If a
Graha is placed in debility or inimical sign, the results are not
going to be auspicious, even if the Graha is placed in a Good
bhava.
6. The Graha placed in a Kendra or Kona also have the
ability to positively impact the Kendra/ Kona where they
are placed. If will do so, (1) if the lord owns a good bhava,
and (2) the lord is placed in Exaltation, Mulatrikona,
Svakshetra and Friendly signs. On the other hand if the lord
owns dusthana and/ or are placed in inimical sign or debility in the
Kendra/ Kona, they will damage these places.
7. Placement of a Dusthana lords in Kendra/ Trikona can
benefit the houses they own, but damage the houses they
are placed in. This is more so if the Dusthana lord is also
inimical to the Lagna lord. For some Lagnas, some Dusthana
lords are not inimical to the Bhava lords, for instance, 6th lord for
Taurus and Scorpio Lagnas, 8th lord for Aries and Libra Lagnas
and 12th lord for Aquarius Lagna. When the Lagna lord also owns
a Dusthana, it does not cease to remain an inauspicious Graha in
the horoscopes, as Lagna lord can never be inauspicious.
8. The damage is even higher, when the Graha placed in
the Kendra/ Trikona while weak (or owning dusthanas) are
also afflicted by other Tamas Grahas (Saturn, Mars, Rahu,
Ketu) by conjunction of aspect (Note, Ketu's aspects are not
counted). The Tamas Grahas if debilitated or in inimical sign, they
are even more deadly and have higher propensity to harm.
9. The results of the Bhava lords in different areas of life
can be seen from its placement in different divisional
charts. For example, if 7th lord is exalted in Dasamsa, Spouse or
Business partners can become great support in promoting the
native's profession or livelihood. For overall results in life, the
three important vargas are Rasi, Drekkana and Navamsa. Hence,
the strength of the Bhavadhipati needs to be seen in various
Vargas. The ideal result is when the Bhavadhipati is placed in
exaltation, own or friendly sign in all the Vargas. However, it is
hardly possible to achieve this condition.

6. Support received from Benefics placed in other
Bhavas

cānyathā cetpraṇāśaṁ
miśraṁ miśragrahendairakhilamāpi tathā
mūrtibhāvādikānām || 6||

Jataka Parijata 11.6. All those Bhavas, whose

Trikona, Sukha (4H), Madana (7H), Aspada (10H) is
filled with Saumya Graha (natural benefics) and
devoid of Drsti from Papa Grahas (natural malefics)
and the Bava lord (Bhavanapa) is devoid of
conjunction with a Papa Graha (Papakheta-ayukta),
all such Bhavas attain strength and prosperity
(Pushti). On the other hand influence of malefics on
the mentioned places cause destruction to the Bhava.
If there are both Benefic and Malefic influences on the
said places, there will be mixed results. Placement of
the bhava lord, even being a malefic in the mentioned
houses promote auspiciousness regarding the house.
Commentary:
1. A Bhava is "not only" impacted by Grahas who are
placed in the Bhava or aspecting the Bhava or forming
good or adverse yoga with the Bhavadhipati or Karaka.
2. A Bhava is also impacted by the Grahas occupying the
Kendra or Kona from a Bhava.

3. The Kendra and the Konas form the support system

i.e., what matters in the world will strengthen or weaken
the significations of a Bhava in its period need to be seen
from the Kendra or Kona. Kendra provides support in the
form of providing the right opportunity and Kona supports
by providing the right resources (and wealth). Kendra =
Lord Vishnu, Kona = Goddess Laxmi.
4. The Kendra and Konas from a Bhava should be conjoined by
natural friends as well as the Bhava lord.
5. The Grahas placed in the Kendras and Konas give their
results in one of the following ways (1) During their Periods, (2)
Association through the person represented by the natural
signification of the Graha, (3) Association through places and
circumstances represented by the natural signification of the
Graha.

6. For instance if Guru is placed in a Kendra or Kona from a

Bhava, then the native will gain auspicious results from that
bhava in (1) Guru dasa- antardasa, (2) by associating with
grandfather, priests, religious scholars, astrologers etc. and (3) by
going to Temples, religious institutions, institutions of higher
studies etc. (refer to the places governed by Guru in standard
classics.).

7. If natural malefics (Krura or Papa Grahas) are placed in the

said places (Bhava lords are exempted), they cause troubles.

8. The placement in the Kendra and Kona should be treated as

secondary influences compared to the association with the Bhava,
Bhavesha and Karaka.

9. Whichever Dasa is running now, one should Judge the

Bhavas falling into the Kendra and Kona from that Graha.
If the Dasa lord is a natural benefic, it will support the
mentioned Bhavas. If it is natural malefic, then the results
will be otherwise.
10. A Graha who is placed in a Kendra or Kona from its Bhava
will provide great strength and prosperity to the Bhava. Thus, if
the Kendra or Kona from the Dasa lord happens to be the sign
owned by the Graha, that Bhava will prosper significantly during
its period.

7. Sources of destruction of a Bhava

Jataka Parijata 11.7. A bhava suffers destruction

when the bhava lord is weak or afflicted when the
Bhavadhipati is (1) placed in the 8th house, (2) Is
combust due to placed near to the Sun, (3) placed in
debilitation or in inimical sign  and (4) devoid of
benefic conjunction or aspect.
Commentary:
1. The key sources of destruction of a Bhava can be
summarized into just three points (1) when the Bhava lord
is placed in the 8th house, (2) the bhava lord is combust
and, (3) placed in debility or inimical sign.
2. If at the same time, if the Bhava lord is devoid of any
conjunction or aspect of natural benefics (Shubha Graha),
the door to cancellation of the weakness is closed.
3. The situation worsens, if the bhava lord is further weakened
by conjunction or aspect by natural malefics (Papa Graha).

4. Among the Dusthanas, the 8th house is considered the worst

in the matters of strength and weakness. Any bhava lord should
not be placed in the 8th house. If it is so placed, it should be
aspected by natural benefics.

5. Many classics endorse that placement of a Bhava lord

in the 8th house from the Bhava itself is also highly
destructive, provided there is no benefic aspect of
conjunction. This causes destruction of especially the
living signification of the Bhava i.e., 2H=family,
3H=siblings, 4H=mother etc. In my opinion, this should be the
correct interpretation of this verse, as destruction of a bhava due
to placement in Dusthana is already mentioned in verse 11.4.
6. When the bhava lord is placed in the 8th from the
Lagna, the native is devoid of auspicious results from the
house, however, if the said lord is placed in the 8th from
its bhava, the living signification of the bhava suffers
destruction.
7. For instance, when the 4th lord is placed in the 8th house,
the native is devoid of happiness from property, real estate,
vehicles etc. However, if the 4th lord is placed in the 8th from the
Bhava i.e., 11th house, it shows gain (11th) of property(4th) to
the native, however native’s mother suffer ill-health (8th from
Bhava). If the 8th lord is also weak and afflicted, then mother
does not live long.

8. Weaknesses due to Bad placement of the

Dispositor

bhāvanāyake |
bhāvasya sampadaṁ kartuṁ na śaktā
bhāvamāśritāḥ || 8||

Jataka Parijata 11.8. A Bhavadhipati can't cause

prosperity to the Bhava it owns, when its dispositor
(bhāvanāyake) is placed in a Dusthana (duḥsthāne),
Inimical sign (arige) or Combust (mūḍhe).
Commentary
1. This adds another layer to the analysis. If a bhava
lord is well placed, then we would normally predict
prosperity of the Bhavas it owns. However, its capacity to
do so it significantly curtailed if the dispositor of the
Bhavadhipati is weak and afflicted.
2. Dispositor of a Graha, say Graha A is the Bhava lord
(Graha B) of the Bhava where Graha A is placed.
3. For instance, if Lagna lord is well placed in a Kendra, it adds
to the strength to the Lagna. However, if that Kendra lord is badly
placed, the Lagna lord significantly loses it strength to protect the
native.

4. The bhava lords which are placed in the said bhava (whose
lord is badly placed) are said to be Bhavamashrita which means
that those bhava lords are dependent (Ashrita) on the strength (or
weakness) of the lord of the bhava where they are placed.
5. Jataka Desha Marga (ch 10) also says that, For
judgement of the bhava the following things to be judged.
(1) Bhava- Grahas placed in the bhava or aspecting it, (2)
Bhava lord- Placement of the Bhavadhipati and the Grahas
conjoin or aspect the Bhavadhipati. (3) Bhava karaka-
Placement of the karaka and the Grahas conjoin or aspect
the Bhavadhipati.
6. In addition the relationship of the Karaka with regards to the
bhava lord also augment the auspiciousness of the bhava. If the
Karaka forms an yoga (exchange, conjunction or mutual aspect)
with the bhava lord, that’s a very encouraging situation. The
Bhavadhipati should never be placed in a Dusthana from
the Karaka, as Karaka represents the wishes of the god
and the Bhavadhipati is just a messenger.
7. Similarly the aspect of the Karaka on the bhava strengthens
the Bhava and gives auspicious results pertaining to the Bhava.

Prasna Marga 14.10: If the bhava lord and the

Karaka are placed in exaltation but in a Dusthana
such as 8th, the auspicious results of the bhava are not
felt. On the contrary if the Bhavadhipati is weakly
placed in debilitation but is placed in a good bhava
such as Kendra, Trikona or Labha bhava, then
although the extent of auspiciousness is diminished,
the native still experiences some auspicious results.
Thus the placement in a bad bhava (Dusthana) causes
more adverse results compared to weakness due to its
position (such as debilitation, inimical sign or
combustion).

9. Cancellation of weaknesses due to aspect of a
Strong Shubha Graha
दष्ु टस्थितो वापि यदा नभोगः पापोऽरिनीचांशकसंयत

pāpo'rinīcāṁśakasaṁyuto yaḥ |
svatuṅgamitrāṁśakarāiyuktaḥ śubhekṣito vā
yadi śobhanaḥ syāt || 9||

Jataka Parijata 11.9. If a planet is placed in a

Dusthana or bad Navamsa (malefic, inimical or
debilitated navamsa), it becomes weak or afflicted.
However, if such planet is aspected by a Benefic
(Shubha Graha) that is placed in the exalted or
friendly Navamsa, then the said weakness is greatly
curtailed and some auspicious results are experienced.
Commentary
1. Aspect of benefics (Shubha Grahas) who are placed in
exalted or friendly Navamsa are very potent as they
gather strength and auspiciousness.
2. Shubha Grahas' ability to cause prosperity is dependent on
its strength; If the Graha is strong, it is extremely potent in
removing blemishes and negativity.

10. Bhava weakness due to Bad placement of the

Jataka Parijata 11.10. When the dispositor of a

Bhavadhipati is placed in Dusthana (duḥsthe), then
the bhava becomes weak (durbalam). On the other
hand, when the dispositor is placed in svakshetra,
exaltation, friendly sign or own sign
(svovccamitrasvarāśisthe), the said bhava becomes
strong (bhāvapuṣṭiṁ) in bestowing auspicious results.
Commentary:
1. In my opinion, Dusta should be broadly interpreted
than just Dusthana. It should mean bad placement in
Dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th), combustion, inimical or
debility Rasi or Navamsa.
2. The strength of the Dispositor although not mentioned, its
placement in Susthana (Kendra, Trikona, Labha bhava), in
Exaltation or Friendly Navamsa or aspected by benefics. Good
placement of the dispositor cause prosperity of the Bhava.

11. Bhava support due to placement of

Bhavadhipati's Mitra and Ucchasthanadhipati in 11H-
2H-3H from Bhava

Jataka Parijata 11.11. When the bhava lord, the

friends of the bhava lord (yadbhāvanāthasuhṛdaśca)
or the lord of the exaltation sign (taduccanāthāḥ) are
placed in the 11th, 2nd or 3rd
(vadbhāvalābhadhanavikramarāśiyātā) from the
bhava, the bhava is strengthened
(tadrabhāvapuṣṭibalamambaracāriṇaste). When the
said Grahas are Combust or placed in inimical sign or
debility, auspicious results are greatly curtailed.
Commentary:
1. In a previous verse placement of Shubha Grahas in
Kendras and Trikonas are mentioned. In this verse the
logic (houses from a Bhava) is extended to other Bhavas.
2. However, the important difference of treatment of
Kendra / Kona vs. 11-2-3 is, regarding Kendra/ Kona, the
placement of Natural Benefics are considered potent to
give auspicious results. On the other hand, regarding 11-
2-3, the Grahas referenced are (1) Friends of the Bhava
lord, (2) Lord of the exaltation sign.
3. These two sets of Grahas need not be natural benefics. For
instance for Mars, the Ucchanatha is Saturn; for Sun, it is Mars.
Thus, for Bhavas owned by Mars, placement of Saturn in the 11th,
2nd or 3rd from the Bhava augurs well for the Bhava under
consideration.

4. Similarly, for Bhavas owned by Sun, placement of Mars in the

11th, 2nd or 3rd from the Bhava augurs well for the Bhava. In this
case, Mars is also the lord of the Bhavadhipati Sun.

5. In a horoscope with Sagittarius Lagna, Saturn is placed in the

7th house. This placement augurs well for the 5th Bhava that is
ruled by Mars, as Saturn is placed in the 3rd house from this
Bhava.

12. Intensity of the Bhava results, judged from the

distance from the Bhava-madhya.
भाविंशतल्

Jataka Parijata 11.12. A planet produces full
effect of the Bhava where it is placed, when its
distance from the Bhava sandhi is equal to that of the
Bhavamsa. When the planet has a less or greater
distance from a Bhava-sandhi than a Bhavamsa, its
effect must be ascertained by the rule-of-third.
Commentary:
1. Grahas placed near the Bhava-Madhya give their
maximum results on account of its placement in the
Bhava.
2. Bhava-Amsa refers to midpoint of the Bhava. According to
the Equal-Bhava scheme, this refers to the longitude of the Lagna
Bhava. According to this scheme, the Bhava-Madhya of all the
Bhavas are equivalent to the Lagna longitude.

3. Bhava-Amsa also refers to the Navamsa of the Bhava

midpoint. The intensity of the results can also be seen from the
distance from that navamsa. If the Graha is placed in the same
Navamsa as the Bhava midpoint, the intensity of the result is
maximum.

4. According to the Equal-Bhava system, the Bhavamsa

always falls in one of the Navamsa Kendra. The Bhavamsa
of the 1-5-9 Bhavas fall in the Navamsa Lafgna, the
Bhavamsa of the 2-6-10 Bhavas fall in the Navamsa 10th
House, the Bavamsa of the 3-7-11 fall in the Navamsa 7th
house; the Bhavamsa of the 4-8-12 fall in the Navamsa 4th
house.
5. When a Graha is placed in the 5th or 9th sign from the
Navamsa Kendra belonging to the Bhavamsa, the effect is
negligible. However, if the Graha is placed in the 12th-1st-2nd
from the Bhavamsa, the impact is highly significant.

6. For instance for a Sagittarius Lagna and Cancer Navamsa

Lagna native, Guru is placed in Aquarius Rasi and Aries Navamsa.
What is the intensity of its results. Since Aquarius is the 3rd house
of the Rasi chart, the Bhavamsa falls in the 7th house from the
Navamsa Lagna. The 7th house in the Navamsa is Capricorn.
From this sign, Jupiter is placed in the 4th sign, which means that
Jupiter is placed near the Bhavamadhya (5th-9th from Kendra
hosting the Bhavamsa). Hence, Jupiter's results in the 3rd Bhava
is less significant.

7. Even when a Graha does not give much results pertaining to

its Bhava placement, it can still give significant results due to its
Rasi placement.

8. Grahas when placed in Bhava-sandhi are incapable of

giving results, good or adverse. Hence, malefics should
ideally be placed in Bhava-sandhi, which while make them
impotent to give adverse results.
