The Second Written Assignment

Akeelah and The Bee

This is a movie about 11 year old girl who is very smart, but doesn't want other students in her
school to know that, because they will bully her. Her teacher found out about her ability when she
scored all the points in the test but she didn't studied.
Mr.Welch, who is principal in her school, suggest that she sign up for the spelling bee in her school.
She refused it, but after being threatened for detention because of skiping a lot of classes, she enters the
competition and wins. Dr.Larabee, who was in audience, tests Akeelah with difficult words, and decides
that she is good enough and he is going to coach her. She was rude to him, so he declined to coach her.
She studied on her own to prepare for the next spelling bee. During the final round of the bee Akeelah
misspells word. Her older sister catched the other finalist cheating and Akeelah qualifies for the regional
bee. She also met Javier who invites her to his school to join the spelling club. There, Akeelah meets
Dylan, who won second place at the past two national spelling bees. After Akeelah misspells a word, he
tells her she needs a coach. Akeelah's mother, Tanya, is concerned about her daughter's grades, and
when she finds out that Akeelah left alone to another city, she forbided her from participating the
upcoming bee. Akeelah decides to secretly study with Dr.Larabee. At the Javier's birthday party, Akeelah
nearly beats Dylan in Scrabble. Akeelah overhears Dylan's overly competitive father insulting her and
criticizes him for nearly losing to black girl. During the state bee Tanya comes inside and interrupts her
daughter. She criticizes Akeelah for going to the bee without her permission. Javier protects Akeelah
from disqualification by stalling until she can return. Dylan, Javier and Akeelah advance to the national
spelling bee. When Christmas came, Akeelah meets with Dr.Larabee to give him present, but then he
tells her he is quiting coaching, because she reminds him od his deceased daughter. He gave Akeelah
5000 flashcards to study. She studied with her family, friends, teachers, classmates and neighbors. She
reunited with Dr.Larabee and they along with her friend Georgia, mother Tanya and Mr.Welch traveled to
Washinghton. At the competition, after all the other competitors are eliminated, only Dylan and Akeelah
left. During break, Akeelah overhears Dylan's father pressuring him to win, so she misspells word on
purpose. Dylan also misspells word on purpose because of his father's competitiveness. Then they
decide on fair competition. They proceed to spell every word correct and judges declared them co-
champions. Dylan's father was happy and for the first time during competition he applauded. When
Akeelah come home her whole neighborhood and school were proud, even her bullies.
Akeelah was brave enough to enter this competition without knowing anything about it, and she
showed kindness when she allowed Dylan to win. For the lesson of this movie, I'll take my favorite quote:
"Have courage and be kind."
