Tech Proposal for Designing a Customized Eyewear

(July 2, 2019)

1. Introduction
The following describes the draft proposal for making a Customized Eyewear design. The design is to
fulfill the requirements set by the client as stated below. The first draft addresses the general
features of the design including the design steps and work hour.
After the project is finalized and the contract is made, the design details will be worked out and
checked with the client to assure all the requirements are included. The final design will be made
according to a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) as the final agreement.

2. Requirements
a. The system uses the following technologies
i. Bone Conduction Technology,
ii. Bluetooth 5.0
iii. Geolocation
iv. Biometrics
v. Wireless Induction Charging
b. The Eyewear Frame should include the hardware
i. Blue Light Lenses
ii. Anti-Slide Nose Pad
iii. Spring Loaded Hinges
c. The size of the frame and location of the components should be according to the given sample.
d. The final design includes the followings
i. The choice of cost-effective, yet durable electronic components for the design
ii. Robustness of the final design
iii. Implementation of safety measures

3. Function of each technology

a. Bone Conduction Technology
This technology is used in order that individuals listen to music and take phone calls.
b. Bluetooth 5.0
This is used to allow customer to receive an alert if they accidentally leave their phone behind.
(Bluetooth SIG allows this technology)
c. Geolocation
This technology allows a customer to find the frames if they are misplaced via app in their phones. This
is similar to the technology that is used in cell phones. (such as in an app named “find my iPhone”)
d. Biometrics
This technology enables customers to track such health information such as their heart rate, count their
steps and calories burned.
e. Blue light lenses

2

The frame has to use lenses that reflect or reduce blue-violet light from the lense. (similar to Zeiss
DuraVision BlueProtect UV lenses that reflects the blue-violet light coming from a digital screen)
f. Anti-Slide nose pads
For luxury considerations the best nose pads should be placed on the frame. Also for the prototype, an
anti-slide temple should be used. (for the inner temple a comfortable, washable rubber on the inner side
should be used to prevent sliding down of the frame on the face.)

g. Spring-loaded Hinges
These hinges are superior to the standard eyewear hinges and should be included in the prototype.
h. Low Nose Bridge
This feature is commonly more needed by the Asian community making it difficult for them to find a
frame that can fit on their nose without sliding down their face.

4. Block diagram
Below displays the overall block diagram of the electronic design. All electronic features are
controlled by a micro controller. The choice of component is give in the next section.

5. Main Components
Below describes some of the main components that are going to be used in the design. The complete
schematic and BOM can be made once the project starts and an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) is
agreed on. The main components are the followings. It should be noted that during the development phase
any better solution would replace the followings and the followings are the initial choice of components.
a. Microcontroller
b. Bone Conduction Technology
c. Bluetooth 5.0
d. Geolocation
e. Biometrics
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a. MICROCONTROLLER: STM32L476

The STM32L476xx devices are the ultra-low-power microcontrollers based on the high-performance
Arm® Cortex®-M4 32-bit RISC core operating at a frequency of up to 80 MHz.

Due to its high technical performance, it would be the initial choice for the above product. For example,
i. The STM32L476xx devices embed several protection mechanisms for embedded Flash
memory and SRAM: readout protection, write protection, proprietary code readout
protection and Firewall.
ii. The STM32L476xx operates in the -40 to +85 °C (+105 °C junction), -40 to +105 °C (+125 °C
junction) and -40 to +125 °C (+130 °C junction) temperature ranges from a 1.71 to 3.6 V VDD
power supply when using internal LDO regulator and a 1.05 to 1.32V VDD12 power supply
when using external SMPS supply. A comprehensive set of power-saving modes allows the
design of low-power applications.

b. BONE CONDUCTION TECHNOLOGY: Gd02 Bone Conduction Module

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT BONE CONDUCTION:

Bone conduction is an artifact of the transmission way, the sound is completely transmitted through the
bone and bone conduction module the skull and jaw as a sound transmission medium, bypassing the
tympanic membrane, auditory ossicles, directly to the sound to the auditory nerve. It is a magical place,
like the sound from the ear, but felt a bit misty, seems to search. It is said that the musician Beethoven
deaf, is the use of bone conduction principle to continue to create. Method of use: Can be simple to
consider it into a special speaker, how it is used with the speaker similar. But it needs more than the horn
drive ability, so the audio output directly to the line on the bone conduction module can hardly heard a
voice. Because the bone conduction and common air conduction headsets, ordinary mobile phone can\'t
direct drive, need special driver chip (i.e., power amplifier chip) driver. With bone conduction hearing
voices has some advantages. It is not through the vibration of air and so it helps avoiding the interference
of other sound sources, namely the use earplugs earplug, bone conduction can still transmit sound.

c. BLUETOOTH 5.0: nRF52840

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT COMPONENTS:

Core52840 is a Bluetooth 5.0 module based on nRF52840, it is pretty small in size, yet still provides
stable and reliable performance, can be directly integrated into kinds of products.

d. GEOLOCATION: GY-GPS6MV2

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT COMPONENTS:

GY-GPS6MV2 NEO-6M GPS Module NEO6MV2 has Built-in EEPROM and APM2.5 Antenna. It works
with 3V-5V RS232 TTL Board for Arduino Flight Controller. It is a cost-effective component that is
suitable for this application

e. Biometrics

i. HEART: e-Health Sensor Shield V2.0 (We need only the sensors enabled on this shield, no need
of full shield)

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT COMPONENTS:

The e-Health Sensor Shield V2.0 allows Arduino and Raspberry Pi users to perform biometric and
medical applications where body monitoring is needed by using 10 different sensors: pulse, oxygen
in blood (SPO2), airflow (breathing), body temperature, electrocardiogram (ECG), glucometer,
galvanic skin response (GSR - sweating), blood pressure (sphygmomanometer), patient position
(accelerometer) and muscle/electromyography sensor (EMG)

ii. COUNT STEPS: DSPX01

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT COMPONENTS:

DSPX01 is a type of 3 axes acceleration module designed for 3Dpedometer applications. It consists
of a 3 axes acceleration sensor (MEMS G sensor) and a low power high-performance MCU. The
MCU analyses the sensor data originated from physical movements. When there is a walking step
or running step, the DSPX01 module will output the step information in the form of a high level
pulse so it is very easy to use. The output pulse width is 50ms in high level. In motionless status the
output of DSPX01 module is low level. Now we can count our steps .... and befit...DSPX01 module
can enter sleep mode by setting CS pin to low in order to save power consumption. This module
works at 2.5~3.3V with extra low power consumption. Because of its compact size, DSPX01 module
can be embedded into mini sports products such as Strip pedometer , Sports shoes, etc. Because
the movements of human beings are different from animals and the forces in different parts ofthe
body are also different.
