Engraved, upright folio format. Score (75 pp.). Single plates 18.5 x 26 cm. Title plate 17 x 24 cm. Plates are
not from the Roger-Le Cène shop, almost certainly English, probabaly from the Walsh shop. The title page is
Dutch engraving work. The paper used for the edition shows that it was produced in Amsterdam.

Sources The sources for the edition were certainly manuscripts. Some suites had been published
two years before in the Suites de pièces pour le clavecin ... Premier volume (London,
Christopher Smith, [1720]), others would appear in the Suites de pièces pour le clavecin
... Deuxième volume, which were published only later (London: John Walsh, [1733]),
although possible prepared before (c. 1727?). Best (1983, pp. 174-175) points to the
resemblance of the contents of this edition to three manuscripts from the late 1710s with
keyboard music by Handel, the Keyboard Book of Elizabeth Legh (1717-1718:
Collection Malmesbury) and the manuscripts Boston, Museum of Fine Art, Edward M.
Ripin Collection, and New York, Publ. Libr., Drexel Mus. Res. 5856. Three pieces are
from other sources: the Prelude p. 1 (HB 48, p. 149, from manuscript), the Prelude p. 6

Remarks Although they realised that Roger’s edition appeared later than Handel’s edition of Suites
de pièces de clavecin … Premier volume (London, Christopher Smith, [1720]), both Best
(1983, p. 175) and Baselt (1986, p. 213) assume that it was Roger’s edition that induced
Handel to bring out his own edition. They must assume therefore that Handel knew, in
1720, that Roger would publish, in 1722, his edition. This seems, however, very unlikely.
Best and Baselt base their opinion on the text of Handel’s preface of the Smith edition,

because surrepticious and incorrect copies of them had got abroad.’ Apart from the fact
that this is a standard excuse for publishing music, the sentence does in fact not have to
mean any more than that manuscript copies were in circulation.

Remarks Although it has been tried to give this edition the appearance of a genuine Roger edition,

figured bass. It seems that Le Cène reprinted six of the sonatas for one viola da gamba,
but without the figured bass. See next item.
