Accommodation Instrument

Contents –

The instrument to measure accommodation is on p. 2.

A parallel instrument to measure perceived partner accommodation is on p. 3
The key for scoring the instrument is on p. 4

Scoring Possibilities –

In the scoring key, you’ll notice that the 16-item instrument is designed in such a manner that
you can develop a measure of accommodation in either of two ways (you should decide
which is more interesting based on your research goals):

Total Accommodation: Just (a) reverse-score responses for the four exit items and the
four neglect items (see p. 4), and then (b) average the participant’s responses across the 16
items

Or…

Exit/Voice/Loyalty/Neglect: Just average the participant’s responses for each set of four
items

Source –

This instrument is a version of that employed in:

Rusbult, C. E., Verette, J., Whitney, G. A., Slovik, L. F., & Lipkus, I. (1991).
Accommodation processes in close relationships: Theory and preliminary empirical
evidence. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 60, 53-78.

Note. This document is formatted for European-sized paper (A4). You will need to re-
format the entire document for printing the instrument or reproducing the instrument for use
on US-sized paper (8.5” x 11”).
