Gas Field Policy 17: Low Temperature Service

GENERAL:

Gas field compressors with standard construction may be applied to temperatures -20°F and above.

Applications below -20°F must be reviewed by the Marketing Department prior to quoting. (In most cases,
aluminum pistons must have a slightly oversize O.D.; the packing rings must be carbon-filled Teflon; the valves
must have HiTemp non-metallic plates; the allowable cylinder working pressure and differential pressure limits
must be reduced; an ethylene-glycol static cylinder jacket cooling must be used with all water cooled cylinders;
and rider or combination rings must be used, etc.)

INLET GAS PREHEAT:

A: Cylinders with forced Cooling:

The following method for estimating inlet preheat applies to all Dresser-Rand gas field compressors
using cylinders with forced cooling.

Where:
K = 0.3 - 0.043429 ln (BHP)
T’i = Preheated Inlet Temperature (°F)
(Use T’i As Inlet Temperature For Performance Calculations)
Tw = Incoming Jacket Water Temperature (°F)
Ti = Inlet Temperature Before Preheat (°F)
BHP = Average BHP Per Cylinder Of Given Stage

Notes:

1) BHP is taken to be the average horsepower per cylinder, of a given stage of the service, on the
design condition. It is not the intent to change the preheat for each of many varied condition or
pocket settings. To determine BHP per cylinder, initially calculate performance based on Ti and
use resulting value in the calculation of T’i.

2) For multistage services, apply correction to:

• 1st stage only if no intercooling is used and there is no gas injected between
stages.
• All stages if there is intercooling between stages or there is a sidestream gas
injected between stages. A separate calculation should be made for each
stage.

B: Cylinders with Gas Cooling:

The following method for estimating inlet preheat applies to all Dresser-Rand gas field compressors
using cylinders with gas cooling.

Where:

K = Cp/Cv

Ti = Given Inlet Temperature (°F)

Ta = Ambient Temperature (°F)

Rc = Ratio Of Compression

T’i = Preheated Inlet Temperature (°F)

(Use T’i As Inlet Temperature For Performance Calculations)

Notes:

1) For multistage services, apply correction to:

• 1st stage only if no intercooling is used and there is no gas injected between stages.

• All stages if there is intercooling between stages or there is a sidestream gas injected
between stages. A separate calculation should be made for each stage.

2) This calculation is handled automatically for gas cooled cylinders by the DRSIZE compressor
sizing program.
