State Float Research Project Lesson

CCSS:
R.I.5.7 Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources
R.I 5.9 Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or
speak about the subject knowledgeably.
W 5.7 Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge
through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
SL 5.4 Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and
using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or
themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.

Learning Objective:
Students will draw upon information from multiple sources to create a slideshow
presentation and float model of one of the United States. They will present their project
to the class. Through the completion of this project, students will grow as Global
Citizens as they appreciate the diversity of the different states.

Model:
-Inform the students that they will be creating a slideshow presentation and parade float
to represent the state of their student.
-I will review checklists and rubrics to explain the project and the requirements
-I will model using the state of California to highlight the industries, agriculture,
ethnicities, landmarks, and other notable characteristics.
-I will model how to create a slideshow presentation using Google Slides
-Students will review photos of sample floats that they will take home for inspiration.

Guided Practice:
-Students will continue their research on their assigned states.
-Student will record notes from their research
-Students will work together to utilize Google Slides to put together their slideshow
presentation on their state. They will assist one another with the application.
-Students will sketch a design for their parade float for their state and share with a
partner
-Teacher will maintain proximity and provide support when necessary

Independent Practice:
-Students will independently further their research
-Students will complete Google Slide Show
-Students will construct their parade float for their state. This will be done both at home
and at school over a few days.

Closure:
-Students will give their presentations to the class and showcase their state parade
float.
-I will remind the students of the diversity of each state and point out that recognizing
and appreciating differences has helped them grow as Global Citizens.
