Federalism in the Philippines

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. Overlapping Jurisdiction
ii. Will Bring more division rather the unity to the country
iii. Political Dynasty being more reinforced once federalism is set

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

That federalism will bring more disadvantages in the government for the
reason that power is now divided into state and regions, and with the
president no longer in full power in the country.

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now

think/realize
That by distributing power to states and regions, the economic
development of the Philippines will be faster because they no longer need
the central government’s consent.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

That the decentralization of the government due to federalism will be more
laborious and costly because the income is widely distributed to other
states leaving the central government with less fund.

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now

think/realize
That the decentralization of the government is actually a good thing for the
reason that the incomes that the states gets will only be kept for
themselves. This will result to a much faster economical development of
the country.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

Federalism is just an easy task for our government and its transition to be
a decentralized government. To be able develop it in shot period of time or
just by the president declaring it and the country is already running on a
federal government.

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now

think/realize
That it takes more than just time. To set up a federal government would
require billions of pesos. It is no easy feat to accomplish and I believe that
the Philippines is not yet ready for the transition.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?)
i. What would the Philippines look like under transition to a federal form
of government?
ii. What are the factors in order to set federalism in the Philippines
successfully?
iii. Do political dynasties really benefit from federalism?

4. Clarification (What are the areas of the text that are still unclear to you?)
i. Federalism will faintly remove unity from the country.
ii. Autonomous regions asking for independence.
iii. The lose of authority from the central government.
