SHEAR FORCE AND BENDING MOMENT ASSIGNMENT

Q1. For the beam ABCD shown in Figure Q1,

a) determine the support reactions at points A and C.
b) determine the expressions for the shear force, v(x) and the bending moments M(x) for the
span BC.
i. Distance x is referred to the left-end A of the beam.
ii. Distance x is referred to the right-end D of the beam.
c) Construct the shear force diagram (SFD) and bending moment diagram (BMD) for the
beam. Please indicate all important values in the diagrams

Q2. Figure Q2 shows a propped cantilever beam ABCDE.

a) Determine the support reactions at fixed-end E.
b) Determine the expressions for the shear force and the bending moments for the span CD.
i. Distance x is referred to the left-end A of the beam.
ii. Distance x is referred to the right-end D of the beam.
c) Also, construct the bending moment diagram of the beam. Please indicate all important
values in the diagrams.

FIGURE Q2

Q3. Figure Q3 shows a shear force diagram of a beam that is supported at A and D.
a) By assuming that no moment is applied to the beam, construct the loading diagram of the
beam.
b) Also, construct the bending moment diagram of the beam.
Please indicate all important values in the diagrams.

Q4. Beam ABCD, as shown in Figure Q4, has an overhanging span AB, while supported by a pin
and a roller at points B and D respectively. A 100 kNm moment is applied at point A and a
vertical 30 kN point load acts at point C. Span BC supports a uniformly distributed load while
span CD supports a trapezoidal distributed load; their intensities are as indicated in the figure.
Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam. Please indicate all relevant
values and their locations where necessary.
