Android 1.

0 was released on this day ten years ago and it is getting smarter and
better with its every release. Being the widest used Operating System (42 % across
platforms) in the world Google is coming up with its newer version of the
Android .i.e. Pie. The 9.0 version of the Android concentrates on adaptivity, speed,
security and is backed by AI.
A few weeks ago, the final version of the OS was released and currently available
on Google Pixel phones, OnePlus6, and the Essential Phone. Following are the
updates that we are going to receive on Android devices with 9.0.

Smart Improvements:
1) Adaptive Battery and Brightness:
 It’s an improvement of Doze mode released in Android marshmallow (6.0)
 It’s going to use Machine Learning to overcome the problem of battery
draining.
 It will predict the apps going to use in the next few hours and limit the
battery power to the apps not going to be used according to our app usage
behavior.
 Adaptive Brightness will learn brightness level preferences for most used
apps in different environments and will automatically adjust it after a certain
time.
2) App Actions:
 It analyzes app usage pattern that user does at specific times during a day.
After that applying Machine Learning on that, it suggests particular actions at
times when the user initiates some action. For example, when you plug in
earphones, it suggests to listen to music or call some specific number at a
particular time.
3) App Slices:
 Right from the Google search, we can access remote content (or a specific
feature) from an app without opening it
4) Indoor Positioning
 In Android 9.0 Apps will be able to build using IEEE 802.11 MC that is Wi-
Fi Round-Trip-Time (RTT).
 A user accessing those apps having such hardware support, location
permission and location enabled will be able to navigate within buildings with
turn-by-turn direction.
Simple and Effective Improvements:
1) Navigation Gestures:
 With new navigation gestures, multitasking approach has been easier
 New pill-shaped home button has been introduced in place of traditional
three back, home and recent apps button
 Double swipe on home opens up the app drawer
 Single swipe opens up recent apps
 Smart Text Selection will be possible through copy-paste between those
apps.
2) Rotation Button:
 We prefer to use different apps in a different orientation as per the
requirement they work mode movie emails or play. For that, we may need to
switch on/off auto rotate button multiple times.
 Android 9 Pie comes with a rotation button that appears whenever we
change the orientation of the device from portrait to landscape or landscape to
portrait. By tapping on it we can lock the orientation of the device with an
ease.
Digital Well-Being:
1) Dashboard
 Looking at the self-care for smartphone users Android Pie will be having a
Dashboard which will showcase how many times your phone has been
unlocked, number of notifications you received, number of hours you spent on
apps.
2) App Timers
 It limits the time seeking apps usage. After that limit App icons turn to
appear Gray.
3) Wind down mode
 once set the bedtime and after that during that particular time phone display
will turn to grayscale.
 It draws down user interest interacting with apps, so user takes a proper rest.
4) Do Not Disturb
 DND mode silences the notifications, vibrations and a visual pop up
interruptions too.
 Putting a device facing down on table enables DND mode
Security Enhancements:
1) Lockdown Mode
 In case of an emergency or threatening situations, if you are forced to use
biometric methods without your permission then lockdown mode can be
useful.
 It disables fingerprint unlocking the smart lock and all the notifications from
the lock screen.
 Pin number, password or pattern will be required to unlock it then.
2) Wi-Fi MAC Randomization
 Whenever a device gets connected to a new Wi-Fi network, a new MAC
address gets assigned to a device randomly.
3) Sensors restrictions for idle apps
 Apps that are idle will be restricted to use device’s mic, camera, and all
other sensors.
