Lesson plan

• Name of lesson: (Don’t) Judge a Book by its Cover Project

• Grade Level Appropriateness: 8th grade+

• Technology Content Standard Addressed: Standard #6: 6d Students publish or present

content that customizes the message and medium for their intended audiences.

• Other Content Standard Addressed: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze

its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting,

and plot; provide an objective summary of the text.

• Objective: The student will understand how to use computer drawing tools and word

processing tools to create an alternative cover of an existing novel, and display their

understanding of a text’s plot throughout the digital work.

• Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: Microsoft Powerpoint, Drawing Tools, Text Boxes

• Suggested group size: 1

• Procedures: Pick any English Literature novel and create an alternative cover of the book on

Microsoft Powerpoint or any other type of application of your choosing. You will be using

drawing tools, line tools, text boxes and clipart for this project. This new cover will have a new,

creative title that you will personally come up with, playing with satire. You will choose what

the title should actually be if it were written by you. For example, instead of “Frankenstein” by

Mary Shelley, your new title could be “The Monster is Not the Monster!!” Or, instead of
2

“Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, you can change the title to “Miscommunication

Can Lead To DEATH!”

Make sure the front cover has some resemblance of the plot (you will not be changing the

plot, just the title and covers). You must make the back of the cover include your own synopsis

of the book in your own words. For example, if you thought the book was boring then write

about how boring the events are, or if it was action-packed then write the summary as if it were a

movie trailer, etc. There must be at least two photos within this project (one on the front, one for

the back), as well as at least one quote from the novel. Also, make sure to create a barcode/ISBN

number on the bottom left corner of the back cover using line tools. Include as much color and

design as you would like, but remember, the book cover and title MUST attract readers’ eyes, as

well as a summary that convinces readers to either pick up the book or leave it where it is

(depending on how much you enjoyed the book!).

Once you are happy with your work, save your creation as a .pdf file and submit it as an

assignment. This project should reflect your understanding of the plot of the book by including

key elements and themes.

Make sure to include your name, date and original title of the novel on the bottom of the back

cover. Happy writing, and have fun!

• Assessment: Rubric for this project -

A: Includes alternative literature title, two pictures, shows outstanding effort, project appears

completed/as if the student took their time, includes at least one quote, summary of novel shows

overall understanding of the plot and themes and is at least one paragraph.
3

B: Includes alternative literature title, includes a quote, has one picture, shows some effort,

project appears complete, summary of novel contains only a few sentences.

C: Includes alternative literature title, has no pictures, no quote, shows minimal effort, project

appears as if it is not complete or rushed, summary has some sentences or is difficult to

understand.

D-F: No alternative title, has no pictures, little/no effort, project is not complete, and summary is

incorrect or contains no summary at all.
