Exam Requirements
It is imperative that I pass the Praxis Core Exam so I can be accepted into the
Education program when I transfer to UNLV in the fall. If I do not pass the exam or I fail
to complete it, I will have to spend more money on a Praxis prep class and will be set
back at least a semester because I will not be able to take any education courses until I
have taken and passed the exam. The passing score for the Praxis Math Exam is 150. The
passing score for the Praxis Writing Exam is 162. Lastly, the passing score for the Praxis
Exam Preparation
In order to prepare for the exam, I went through a couple of the Praxis Prep
websites and looked over some of their practice questions. I also researched about the
exam beforehand as well, mostly looking for the time limits on each portion so I can try
to act as though I were actually taking the exam when I completed the practice exam. I
did not prepare much for the reading portion because I remember that I had very strong
reading comprehension in high school. The math portion I looked over, but I only really
studied the geometry formulas that I definitely knew that I did not remember from my
freshman year of high school. Writing is where I studied the most before taking the exam
Exam Results
In Reading, I scored in the 55% range, which means that I have a pretty high
possibility of failing the Reading portion when I take the official Praxis Core Exam. I
struggled a lot with this section, and I knew that I was going to fail while I was taking the
practice exam. It has been a long time since high school and I should not have skipped
over studying the Reading portion from the success I had in this area 5 years ago. In
Writing, I scored in the 78% range, which means that I’m borderline on whether I will
pass the Writing portion when I take the official Praxis Core Exam. While I was taking
this portion of the practice test, I definitely struggled. I did not struggle as much as when
I was taking the Reading portion, but I found myself second guessing myself a lot and
rereading the questions multiple times. In Math, I scored 89%, which means that I’m
likely to pass the Math section when I take the official Praxis Core Exam. Completing the
practice exam, I felt fairly confident throughout the entire thing except for word
problems.
In order to prepare for the Praxis Core Exam, I am going to actually study the
Reading portion through the ETS website. Not preparing for this section was a big
mistake and I definitely now know that I need to put some time and effort into studying
this section based upon my score. For the Writing portion, I am going to go back to the
ETS website and complete the practice test there. While I did not fail that portion
compared to the Reading portion, I received a borderline score and did not feel
comfortable while I was taking the test. I also took a very long time to complete these
sections and went over the time limit for the actual test so I am going to have to become
more comfortable with the material so I can complete the test in the given amount of
time.
