McConkey Instrument Lesson Plan

Title​: Adding on Story with Instruments

Source​: Dr. McConkey

Material Needed:​ Add-on story book, glockenspiels, finger cymbals. Vibraslaps,

triangles, jingle bells, cow bells, and tone blocks.

Procedure

A.S​.: What does it mean to add? Can you tell me what it means to add?

1. Teacher is going to read an “add on” story. They explain what it is.

2. Begins by singing the words in the book “There was an old lady who swallowed a

fly”.

3. Have the students repeat the phrase “Perhaps she’ll die” after reading sections of

the book.

4. Introduce the glockenspiel to the students and explain and play the notes that

sound like “Perhaps she’ll die”.

5. Hand out glockenspiels, finger cymbals. Vibraslaps, triangles, jingle bells, cow

bells, and tone blocks.

6. Demonstrate how each instrument is used and have children model it back to the

teacher.

7. Teacher reads the book and children play their instrument to their chosen animal

in the book.

8. Ask students how many instruments were used to represent an animal.


Closure:​ Ask the students to count how many instruments were handed out. They

needed to add all the instruments together to know how many instruments were used.

an instrument.
