    The year is 2045 and the world is suffering from global warming and a debilitating

    energy crisis that has caused an economic standstill and social unrest. For most people, the only

    escape is a virtual reality universe called the OASIS. The OASIS is a massive multiplayer

    simulation game that simulates a type of utopia that allows people to be whoever they want to

    be while forgetting the realities of the crumbling world around them. The OASIS was created

    by James Halliday, who has recently died and left his entire fortune and estate to one player

    that can follow the clues to a hidden “easter egg”. Those who participate are called “Gunters”

    as the years pass many gunters have tried to find the location of the first clue but have been

    unsuccessful. Until one day an 18-year-old kid living in a trailer with his aunt in Oklahoma

    appears on the scoreboard. This is the story of what happens next.
