 What did you learn about media this semester that you did not know before?

I
learned many things about media, but one of the things that interested me the most was
module 2 “The Internet, Digital Media, and Media Convergence”. I found that lecture very
interesting, I never knew that social media has become so prominent in our culture that many
people experience FOMO. At first, I did not know that FOMO was a real thing but after
doing some research it turned out to be a real condition that people have and in fact I know
people who have this fear. They want to experience every little moment there is since, they
do not want to miss anything, and they want to be part of something. But what really blew
my mind was learning about the birth of the internet, this is something I use every day and I
never knew how it started or what the internet really is. I learned about ARPAnet which was
created by the Department of Defense to enable researchers to share computer processing
time. And there was no master switch to shut it down which I thought was crazy. We also,
learned the different types of Networks and how they function. I also, I did not know how the
internet evolved from the very beginning, I learned that in 1971 E-mail improved
communication but it was mostly a tool for universities, government labs, and computer
companies which grew into the entrepreneurial stage.
 Is there a specific element of media that you became interested in this semester and
why? This semester the most interesting element of media was ‘Audience’. The reason why
audience was interest was because it can either be broad or narrow. Meaning that audience
can be made up according to a common belief or multiple believes. I feel that audience is one
of the most important elements of media. Without an audience there would be no existence
for media. Instead of the media feeding the audience it’s the audience who feed the media.
