• Sometimes moving the jar only a joint up or down in the drillstring can
drastically change how the stress waves add together to create jarring
force on the stuck point.

The Impact Impulse Factor

To be effective, the jarring force (impact load) must exceed the sticking force.
How far the stuck object moves depends on the duration of the impact load. The
combined effect of impact load and duration is called impulse. Optimum jar
placement occurs with the largest impulse for an impact load greater than the
sticking force.

Features and Advantages of the

Drilling Jar Placement Program
• Stress wave analysis techniques which track all stress waves.
• Unlimited number of section changes are allowed, enabling the
modeling of virtually any drillstring and bottom hole assembly.
ISO-9001
• Effects of hole angle, hole curvature, and frictional drag are included
• Suitable for analysis of straight, directional, and horizontal holes.
• Uniquely designed to model all National Oilwell drilling jars.
• Separate programs for drilling and fishing to allow appropriate data
input and output results in field useable terms.
• Rapid solutions on personal computers for office or in the field use.
Certified Quality System • Offered as a service for National Oilwell customers — years of proven success
in all types of field applications.

Bowen Cushion Sub

Bowen Cushion Sub

The patented Bowen Cushion Sub provides for the highest drilling penetration rate by virtually
Mandrel eliminating the variable dynamic loading conditions on the bit.
The extremely long stroke, combined with a very low spring rate, provides a soft impact absorption

Wiper system that greatly extends the life of the bit and of the drill collar.
Mandrel Packing
Retainer This drilling string shock absorber should be located as close above the bit as possible to best absorb
Packing Set pounding forces with least variation in bit load.
The Bowen Cushion Sub adjusts automatically to any desired bit weight within its working range.
Packing Retainer
• The low spring rate allows energy absorption at a nearly constant rate without high load
buildup on the bit. Nearly all the energy is absorbed by the Cushion Sub and very little is
transferred into the drill string.
Fill Plug • Its short length gives it stiff column characteristics to withstand large bit loads. Its long stroke
offers excellent operation at both high and low bit loads.
Spline Body
• The automatic dampening characteristic of the fluid prevents vibration resonance at any
rotation speed.
Middle Body • Simple design increases tool life and reliability.

Mandrel Retainer
• Broached precision splines provide for balanced torsional loading and mandrel stability
• Low wear, stabilized mandrel housing, eliminates any lateral bit movement. It automatically
compensates for pressure and temperature changes.

Griffith Annular Blowout Preventer

The Griffith Annular Blowout Preventer is a simple but effective means of
controlling well pressures in the annulus or open hole. It employs principles and
methods proven reliable over many years of field service. The preventer requires
hydraulic pressure to both open and close, however, well bore pressure assists in
keeping a closed preventer closed. It is recommended that the closing unit have
a separate pressure regulation valve dedicated to the annular BOP. It will also
seal off around almost any size or shape of component that would be run
through the closed packing unit by using a pressure control valve or accumula-
tor in the preventer control system.
The preventer is designed and tested to meet or exceed all applicable API and
NACE standards and specifications. Inspection and maintenance may be carried
out in the field since special tools or equipment are not required. Packing unit
life may be easily checked without disassembly by measuring piston travel
through a port provided in the preventer top. Packing unit replacement is done
by simply removing the preventer head and replacing the element. During
packing element replacement, the junk ring remains in position preventing
contamination of the hydraulic operating chambers. Griffith Annular Blowout Preventer
