Bowen Type D Jar Tester

Bowen Type D Jar Tester

The Bowen Type D Jar Tester is a versatile machine designed to exert
a tension or compression load which ranges from zero to 70 tons (140,000
pounds). It is engineered to accomplish this in a simple and controlled manner.
The Bowen Jar Tester will accept a tool up to 110" in length and 10" O.D. It
has a 20" stroke. A suitable, easy to read indicator is incorporated to show the
applied load in tons.

Uses
The Bowen Jar Tester provides an accurate and effective means of testing Bowen
Hydraulic Rotary Jars and Fluid Intensifiers and for setting Bowen Mechanical
Rotary Jars, Bowen Jar Safety Joints, Drilling Jars, (2 to 5 foot extensions
required for Drilling Jars), and Bowen Bumper Subs at any desired tripping
tonnage. This Jar Tester is especially useful in locations where proper main-
tenance of these tools must be conducted by the operator. It is also used for
checking other equipment, such as formation testing tools.
The Jar Tester can be used with Bowen Service Center and Rotary Tool Service
Type “D” Jar Tester
Units.

Construction
The Bowen Jar Tester consists of a long, sturdy horizontal frame, composed
of three main load members, and suitable positioning yokes. An adjustable
pull plate maintains one end of the tool being tested, while the other is held
by the crosshead. The crosshead is attached to a hydraulic actuated piston and
cylinder.
The hydraulic force required to operate the piston is provided by an electric

Soft Shoe Jaws are the answer to the problem of damage to pipe surfaces • Custom units available
caused by conventional tong dies during make-up and break-out operations.
This damage is particularly detrimental to premium pipe and undesirable on
any tubular.
The Bowen patented “soft shoe” design is the result of extensive testing and
employs a separate jaw insert for each diameter pipe. These inserts cover in
excess of 90% of the diameter where the pipe is gripped. Unlike other soft grip
devices, which merely wrap around the pipe, the Bowen design uses a rubber
cushion behind the insert which distributes the gripping and torsional forces
uniformly around the pipe. This feature eliminates the tendency to “bite” the

Bowen Model 911 “Soft-Shoe” Tubing Tong

The Model 911 Tubing Tong utilizes Bowen’s patented soft shoe jaw system.
An open-faced, soft-shoe tong and floating rotary backup system, Model 911 is
designed especially for your premium tubing requirements.
By spreading its gripping force evenly over the tubing surface, the tong jaws
of the 911 gently mold themselves to the various irregularities of the tubing. The
result? Minimum marking and damage.
Model 911 also features a unique design that eliminates the side and bending
loads which other’ tong systems impose on the tubing connection. Plus, for
your most demanding applications, Model 911 can be configured either with
integrally-mounted electronic or hydraulic load cells to give precise readings.
• All the convenience and ease-of-use of an open face tong
• No special steps necessary to engage the tubing
• Precise readings, regardless of application
• Variable speed adjustments to 1 rpm
• Rugged design requires minimum maintenance,
regardless of surrounding environment
• Precise handling — time after time
• Designed to work with the Bowen Compu-Torque Computer System
