STREPTOCOCCUS

o Some are nonpathogenic and normal flora ( found in Human GIT)

o Seen in dairy products
o Gram-positive cocci: Pairs or chains because cell division occurs in one plane
o Negative catalase test will differentiate Streptococci and Enterococci from Staphylococci
o Catalase negative (Weak positive reactions for catalase can be seen if colonies are taken from blood-
containing culture media due to peroxidase activity of hemoglobin)
