First Annual Math Talent Quest

April 17th, 2012

PLEASE DO NOT START UNTIL

INSTRUCTED TO DO SO
Instructions:
1. Answers in Part A are letters A – E; answers in Parts B and C are integers
ranging from 000 to 999. There is only one correct answer for each problem.

2. Each of the problems 1-8 is worth 10 points. Each of the problems 9-16 is
worth 20 points. Each of the problems 17-24 is worth 30 points.

3. There is neither partial credit nor any penalty for wrong answers; your score
is the sum of the full point values for each problem correctly solved.

4. You may only use scratch paper, pencil or pen, ruler, compass, protractor,
and graph paper during this contest. No other aids may be used during the
test.

5. Once the test begins, you are not allowed to ask any questions regarding the
content of the test; this includes questions relating to the interpretation of
directions or the meanings of words. If you have any questions, please ask
them now.

6. Add leading zeros to any 1 or 2-digit answers for problems 9-24. For example,
if your answers are 0, 4, and 29, you should put 000, 004, and 029,
respectively, as your answers on your answer sheet.

7. You have 60 minutes to complete this test.

10. How many positive integers less than 1000 are multiples of 3 or 7, but not 21?

11. A teacher hands out candies to her students. If she gives 5 candies to each student,
then she would have 2 candies left over. If she gives 7 candies to each student, then she
would be not have enough; she would be in short by 6 candies. How many candies does
the teacher have?

12. Find the number of rectangles in the following figure:

13. As shown on the right, each of the boxes represents a digit 0-9,

zero. What is the largest of the three addends? 2 0 1 2

14. In a certain kind of four-digit number, the sum of any two adjacent digits is less than
or equal to 2, and the sum of any three adjacent digits is greater or equal to 3. Find the
number of all such four-digit numbers.

15. Tom sleeps soon after 2 A.M. after he has done a lot of math. Just before he went
asleep, he looked at the clock and found something interesting: the hour-hand and the
minute-hand exactly overlap each other. He wakes up soon after 8 A.M. because he
wants to do more math, and he again noticed something interesting: the hour-hand and
the minute-hand form a straight line. If Tom sleeps for x hours, find 100 x .
