F. READING COMPREHENSION (10 ITEMS): Read the questions carefully. Then, encircle
the letter of the best answer.
The principle of homeostasis is the body’s tendency to maintain constant internal
environment. This equilibrium-preserving tendency is needed for the body to survive and
function, and if it is upset in some manner, steps must be taken to restore it. Psychologists
maintain that any physiological or psychological (1) will motivate behavior designed to restore
equilibrium. The hungry, (2), uncomfortable, or fearful person will be motivated to do something
to reduce the tension. For example, the lowering body temperature in any organism will ring
about internal coordinated changes; restriction of blood flowing through the peripheral vessels,
thus, retarding heat loss, and increasing fat (3). Tensing of muscles and shivering may result as
the body temperature remains low. The activity level of the organism will be observed to
increase such movement to a warmer environment. A cat may curl up itself near a hot stove; a
dog may walk into the sunshine; a person may put on heavier clothing or he may adjust the
conditioner if he feels too cold. Under the homeostatic theory of motivation, there is an innate
need to keep physical balance or a (4) internal environment which is considered the motivating
force of behavior. (Sevilla, Rovira, & Vendivel Jr., 1984)

A Eulogy of Roaches by Bienvenido Lumbera

Blessed are the cockroaches.

In this country they are

the citizens who last.
They need no police
to (10) their peace
because they tolerate
each other's smell or greed.

Friends to dark and filth,

they do not choose their meat.
Although they neither sow
nor reap, a daily feast
is laid for them in rooms
and kitchens of their pick.

The roaches do not spin,

and neither do they weave.
But note the russet coat
the sluggards wear: clothed
at birth, roaches require
no roachy charity.

They settle where they wish

and have no rent to pay.
his opportunities
pile up where garbage grows.
Eviction is a word
quite meaningless to them
who do not have to own
their dingy crack of wall.

Not knowing dearth or taxes,

they increase and multiply.
Survival is assured
even the jobless roach;

Dying is brief and cheap

and thus cannot affright.
A whiff of toxic mist,
an agile heel, a stick
-- the swift descent of pain
is also final death.

Their annals may be short,

but when the simple poor
have starved to simple death,
roaches still circulate
in cupboards of the rich,

the strong, the wise, the dead.

Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa?
Ni Lualhati Bautista
Unang Kabanata

magsisipagtapos.
“Ladies and gentlemen, here comes kindergarten class, section one, handled by Mrs. Erlinda
Macasaya! Please give them a big hand!”
Palakpakan.
Macasaya.
“Coming next is kindergarten class, section two, led by their adviser, Miss Elvira Sagun. Ladies
and gentlemen, please give them a big hand!”
Martsa papasok ang section two.
reklamuhan kabi-kabila, paypayan, singhalan.
titser at nagsabi:
“Tser, may I go out!”
Napahindig ang titser. “Mamaya!”
“Iihi ako!”
“Mamaya sabi!”
Nagbanta ang bata. “Ba’la kayo!”
“Ssh!”
pati make-up at liptstick.
maruming tingnan ang isang batang naka make-up at lipstick.
To differentiate, sagot niya. Dahil meron siyang Tatay Raffy.
Pag nasa mood sila.

Siyempre araw-araw me praktis, kayo.”
“S’yempre!”
“Baka mamaya, iiyak ka?”
“Baka ikaw ang iiyak, Nanay?”
“Bakit ako?”
“Bibili mo ‘kong toga saka gown saka bikini. Maraming perang kailangan do’n!”
May lagnat
na ito kahapon. 38.2.
pull out.
pag-awit, tula, at sayaw!”
“Oh Captain, my captain!” banat ng ikatlong bata.
May
kasama pang malakas na tawanan.
Pero hindi pumalakpak ang prinsipal. Hindi natawa. Kundi napahindig:
“Sino pa!” at nagmamalaki pa!
Tumalim ang tingin ni Ding kay Lea. “Talagang wala kang turong mabuti!”
At least
“’Yong pinakamalaki,” iyong pinakamalaking
trophy ang nakalaan sa Miss Kinder.
Third Princess!
Second Princess!
At nahihiya.
Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Kinder ’82 Dolores Villafuerte! Let’s give
her a big hand, please!
“And now, Miss Kinder ’83, ladies and gentlemen... because of her simplicity, her freshness,
poise and total personality...” pause. Birada ng tugtog. Mga nakabiting hininga. “Maria Natalia Gascon!”
Pati puso yata niya’y
Klik! Lumalabo ang lens sa mga mata niya. Ano ‘to, umiiyak ba siya? Klik!
Klik! Maya, naririnig mo ba, anak? Si Raffy ang naging katumbas mo! Alam mo ba kung sino si
Raffy? Iyon ang pinakamalaking pag-ibig ko!
Klik! Klik!
“Ding, ‘yong film! Sagad na ‘to, Ding ‘yong film!”
“Eto, eto!”
“Diyos ko, matagal pa ba bago malagay ‘yan! Mae-expose ‘tong nauna!”

Dito
sana dapat mapaiyak sa tuwa si Lea. Pero by that time e wala na siyang luha... kung paanong wala ring

paninindigan bilang isang mamamayan.

May
nangalugmok at nangahandusay. Ang iba nama’y sugatang nagsipanakbuhan. O! Kasuklam-suklam na
panoorin…

Bakit kayo nangingiti? Bakit nga? Bakit ninyo ako pinagmamasdan mula paa hanggang ulo?
Mula ulo hanggang paa? Bakit?
tumakbo!
