observed to have a horizontal displacement of 25 mm when a weight of 75 kN is moved by 5 m
across the deck. Find the metacentric height of the ship. [5M]

(b) A pair of photograph was taken with an aerial camera from an altitude of 4000 m above MSL.The
mean principal base measured is 88 mm. The difference in parallax between two points is 1.50 mm.
Determine the difference in height between the two points if the elevation of the lower point is
450 m above M.S.L. Calculate the difference in elevation corresponding to the parallax difference
of 1.90 mm. [15 M]

(c) A tank of 20 m2 in area contains water 4 m deep. Find the time taken for emptying the tank through
a pipe 30 m long and 15 cm diameter connected to the bottom of tank. f = 0.01. [15M]

(d) At a certain section M in rectangular channel of bed width 2 m, the depth of flow is 1.20 m. When
the flow rate is 6 m3/sec. Estimate the distance from M to another section N where the depth is 1.40
m. The bed slope is 0.0020 and n = 0.015. Take two steps in direct step method. [15M]

(ii) Describe pumped storage hydro power plant with neat sketch. Why pumped storage power
plant is used? [6 M]
(iii) A hydraulic intensifier is to increase pressure from 400 kPa to 1800 kPa. The stroke of
intensifier is 0.9 m and capacity of low pressure cylinder is 20 m3. Determine the piston
diameter on low pressure side and high pressure side. [5 M]

(c) As chaining was not possible, a traverse was conducted using tacheometry. The line of sight was
horizontal in all cases. The data was obtained. Find the lengths of the sides and the length and
bearing of line AC. Find also the gradient from A to C if the reading on a staff held at a benchmark
is 2.415 from A and 0.645 from C. The instrument constants were 100 and 0.3. [20 M]

(a) For a railway project, a straight tunnel is to be run between two points P and Q whose co- ordinates

(c) A curve has to lie between two tangents having bearings of 30o 30 and 300o 30. The point of
intersection was not accessible due to an obstacle. A line PQ, P and Q lying on the tangents, was
measured and found to be 182.5 m long. The bearing of PQ was 70 o45. If T1 P = 200 m and the
chainage of T1 is 1002.50 m, find the chainages of the point of intersection and the forward
tangent point. [10 M]

(d) At the foot of a 30 m wide spillway in a dam where the discharge velocity is 28.2 m/s and the depth
is 0.96 m, a hydraulic jump is formed on a horizontal apron. Calculate the height of jump and the
total power dissipated in jump. [10M]

(e) A 1:4 scale model of Francis turbine is tested in laboratory under head of 15 m. The model
consumes 2 m3/s water while producing 260 kw power. If the prototype runs at 420 rpm under 35 m
net head, then what should be discharge and power developed by the model? Assume relation
between overall efficiencies of model & prototype is given by Moody‟s step up formula

(ii) The true difference of elevation between two points A and B, 150 m apart, is 0.984 m. A level
was kept along the line AB produced, but close to B, and readings were taken on the staff held
at A and B. If the readings are 2.055 and 1.051 on A and B, respectively, find the angular error
in the line of collimation and also the length of sight for which the error due to the angular error
in collimation equals that due to curvature and refraction. [6 M]

(e) A 30 m steel tape was standardized on the flat and was found to be exactly 30 m under no pull at
66oF. It was used in catenary to measure a base of 5 bays. The temperature during the measurement
was 92oF and the pull exerted during the measurement was 10 kg. The area of cross-section of the
tape was 0.08sq.cm. The specific weight of steel is 7.86 g/cm3.
