(b) What are the different components of wind power system? What are the main factors associated
with selection of a site for wind farm. (10)

Q2.
Evaluate the suitability of various types of generators for wind power generation? What are the different
methods of controlling the turbine speed and generated power output of a wind turbine? Explain one in detail.
(10)

Q3.
Differentiate with examples between constant and variable speed generation system in wind system. What
ire the drawbacks of fixed speed WECS? (10)

Q4.
Explain the I-V characteristics of a solar cell? Explain how the variation of isolation and temperature
affects the 1-V characteristics of a solar cell. (10)

Q5.(a) With the help of block diagrams explain the operation of standalone and grid connected SPV systems.
(b) A PV module is made up of 36 identical cells, all wired in series. With 1-sun insolation (1 kW/m2),
each cell has short-circuit current Isc = 3.4 A and at 25°C, its reverse saturation current is h
Parallel resistance Rp = 6.651 and series resistance Rs= = 6x10-1° A.
0.0050. Find the voltage, current, and power delivered
when the junction voltage of each cell is 0.50 V. (10)

Q6.
With the help of schematic diagram explain the working of a solar water heating system. What is the basic
difference between an active and passive solar heating system? (10)

Q7.
What is a Fuel Cell? What are the main advantages and disadvantages of the fuel cells? Explain working
principle with a suitable diagram of PEMFC. (10)

18. What do you understand by energy storage? On what basis are energy storage are classified? Explain the
main features of various type of storage batteries? What are the main advantage and limitation of battery
storage system? Which type of energy storage method is employed in Electric Vehicles? (10)

Q9. Consider a grid connected PV array rated at 1 kW under standard test conditions. Module nominal
operating cell temperature (NOCT) is 47°C. Power output at the array drops by 0.5%/°C above the STC
temperature of 25°C.
(a)
Estimate its ac output under normal conditions if there is a 3% array loss due to mismatched modules, dirt
loss is 4%, and the inverter has an efficiency of 90%. (Ambient temperature 20°C, isolation S=1kW/m
(b) 2).
Estimate the annual energy (ac) delivered by this 1-kW array if it is installed at a site (Patiala) of annual
insolation average of 4.5 kWh/m2/day.
(c)
What will be the energy output of array in the month of January, if it is installed at leh at ambient
temperature of -4.0°C and an average monthly insolation of 3 kWh/m2/day.
(d) If the cost of array is Rs 1, 00,000 and it has a useful life of 25 years. The average annual maintenance cost
is 2% of the capital cost and discount rate is 10%. Calculate the unit cost of a electricity in case of it is installed
at Patiala. (20)
