Work Measurement

 Process used to determine what constitutes a fair day’s work from both the
perspective of the employer and the employee.

Nature of Work Measurement

 Greater control over office operations can be exercised when work standards
are used for comparing actual results with anticipated results.

Objectives of Work Measurement

 Aids in setting work standards.  Aids in determining efficiency


of work methods and processes.

 Aids in planning and scheduling work.  Aids in determining the cost of


office operations

Advantages

 Work measurement helps determine appropriates of the number of employee


assigned to a work unit, as well as the efficiency with which individual

INSTALLING A WORK MEASUREMENT PROGRAM:

Make Preliminary Plans


 The objectives of the program should be outlined, the work
measurement techniques should be selected, and the timetable for
installing the program should be determined.
Hire Employees
 The duties and responsibilities of the individuals who are
responsible for the program should be determined before their
selection.
Gain Acceptance of and support for the program
 The individuals involved with the installation and operation of the
program should be used extensively in gaining acceptance of and
support for the program.
Collect Important Data
 If the selected work measurement technique requires gathering
data from various work units, the individuals responsible for data
collection should be familiarized with the mechanics of the
technique
Analyze Collected Data and Develop Standards
 Once the necessary data have been collected, they should be
analyzed, and standard should be developed accordingly.
Train Supervisors and Managers
 Each supervisors and managers in the organization who is directly
and indirectly responsible for an employee whose job is affected
by work measurement should receive training on the use of work
measurement and the implementation of standards
Instruct Employee
 Once supervisor received training in the implementation and use
of standards. They should inform their subordinates of expected
levels of production.
Follow up
 Successful work measurement program are evaluated periodically,
with the follow up occurring more frequently during the early
stages of the program.

 Work measurement technique in which employee output records
are used to determinate the amount of the time needed to complete
a particular job.

Work Sampling
 Work measurement technique that uses random observations to
determine the amount of time consumed by each element job task
or duty.
