FOREST FIRES

1. What are forest fires?

Forest fires are wildfires in a natural area, such as forests, pastureland or grassland.

2. CAUSES OF FOREST FIRES

2.1. Intentional

Most of the cases are arson, these actions correspond to an unauthorized or illegal
burning of forests. They can be produced by farmers who burn the soil to make the
land more fertile, by the use of pyrotechnic elements, in acts of vandalism, burning
of rubble or responding to actions taken as revenge.
2.2. Negligence

These fires are caused by accidental causes or that correspond to the negligence of
those responsible, they are authorized burns that got out of control, are generated by
cigarette butts or bonfires that were not completely extinguished, machinery failures
or other events of that kind.

2.3. Natural causes

It is mainly caused by solar rays, electrical rays from storms or lava from volcanoes,
giving rise to a forest fire that is difficult to control, strong winds can cause flames
to advance more quickly. It occurs on very rare occasions.

3. CONSEQUENCES:

 Destruction of the ecosystem and the landscape.

 Loss of soil due to erosion.
 Destruction of the surface structure of the soil.
 The drag of the ashes causes a compaction that prevents the penetration of the
water.
 Torrential rains carry ash into rivers and the waters increase their turbidity,
contaminating them. • Significant amounts of CO2 are released into the atmosphere,
in addition to other gases and particles, which affects the greenhouse effect and
climate change.
 Carbon particles and suspended ash have a detrimental effect on people's health.
 People and animals die, crops and natural resources are destroyed.
 There are interruptions in transportation, gasoline, electricity and communications
services.
