How to Be Successful in MUN: MUN for First-Timers

1. Preparation Tip
❖ Your first MUN conference can be an easily overwhelming experience.
The best way to keep your cool is to be prepared. Do your research
beforehand so you know your subject and committee well. Consider
preparing a research binder with any and all relevant information for
easy access during committee sessions.

2. Research Tip
❖ Research is the best way to prepare and succeed in MUN! Make sure
you understand your topic thoroughly by reading the background
guide and doing supplemental research. Make sure to diversify your
sources of information and research not only your country’s
relationship with the topic, but other countries in your committee as
well. Having a well-rounded understanding of your topic will prepare
you for debate and caucusing. Remember, the best defense is a good
offense!

3. Presentation Tip
❖ Make sure to capture your fellow delegates’ attention when speaking!
Maintain a clear and stable voice while debating and keep eye contact
when speaking with delegates directly. The best way to persuade
people and share your ideas is to do so with confidence and poise.

4. Writing Tip
❖ Your first speech is your committee’s introduction to you as a delegate
and representative of your country. Prepare your speech ahead of time
and practice your presentation. This will set the tone for the rest of
your committee and will give you a strong start to the conference!

5. General Tip
❖ Always be diplomatic. It is important to remember that you are
representing not only your assigned country, but the United Nations
as a whole. Make sure to have fun, but be respectful of your fellow
delegates and maintain decorum at all times!
