ASSIGNMENT

TOPIC: ONE WAY ANOVA

SESSION: SPRING 2020

COURSE NAME & CODE: QUANTITATIVE
ANALYSIS FOR BUSINESS (MAT304)
STUDENT NAME & ID: ABDUL MOIZ (BB-28643)
TEACHER NAME: SYED M.RIAZ UL HAQUE
DATE OF SUBMISSION: 24-04-2020
Q1) A random sample of heights (in feet) of mountain peaks in three states is listed. Using the 0.05
level of significance, test the claim that the mean height is the same for all three states.

Alaska Colorado California

17,400 14,420 14,320

16,237 14,309 14,494

15,885 14,270 14,246

14,500 14,264 14,153

14,163 14,197 14,058

14,067 14,027

Solution:
Step 1 State the hypotheses and identify the claim.
H0: µ1 = µ2 = µ3
H1: µ1 ≠ µ2 ≠ µ3

Step 2 Find the critical value.

K = 3, N = 17, and α = 0.05
d.f N= k – 1= 3 – 1 = 2
d.f D= N – k= 17 – 3= 14
The critical value is 3.74.

Step 3 Compute the test value.

(a) Find the mean and variance of each sample (it given in data table below)

Step 3

(b) Find the grand mean.

Step 3

(c) Find the between group variance.

S2B = 2

S2B = 3,468,837.387
Step 3

(d) Find the within group variance.

( 5−1 ) ( 1748779.5 )+ ( 6−1 ) ( 13830.6 ) +( 6−1)(30730.66)

7,217,924.3
S2w =

S2w = 515,566.0214

Step 3

(e) Find the F-test value.

S 2B 3,468,837.387
F = S2W = 515,566.0214

F = 6.73

Step 4
Make the decision. Since 6.73 ≤ 3.74, therefore we accept alternate hypothesis and reject null
hypothesis.

Step 5
Summarize the results. There is enough evidence to support the claim that there is a difference
among the means.
Q2) Random samples of population ( in thousands ) of U.S. cities in three sections of the country
are listed. Is there evidence to conclude a difference in means at the 0.01 level of significance?

Solution:
Step 1 State the hypotheses and identify the claim.

d.f D= N – k= 22 – 3= 19
The critical value is 5.93.

S2w = (7−1 ) + ( 7−1 )+(8−1)
173,851.15
S2w = 19

S2w = 9,150.060526
Step 3

(a) Find the F-test value.

S 2B 3,307.698864
F = S 2 W = 9,150.060526

F = 0.36
Step 4
Make the decision. Since 0.36 ≥ 5.93, the decision is to accept the null hypothesis.

Step 5
Summarize the results. There is enough evidence to support the claim that there is a difference
among the means.
