Dear Mr./Mrs./Ms. [Manager’s Name],

I am writing to apply for the position of Media Relations Assistant Manager,

which I saw advertised on MediaJobs.com. ABCD is a fast-moving global
institution and an outstanding communications pioneer, now poised to guide the
direction of print journalism. I believe that my extensive experience in media
makes me an ideal candidate for this position at your company.
As a recent graduate of the State University, I have a significant background in
media. As a media major, I held multiple internships, including Media Relations
Coordinator Intern at XYZ Company. I also served as president of the Media
and Marketing Club at school. We successfully developed and pitched an
advertisement campaign for a local nonprofit, which helped increase donations
to the nonprofit by 22 percent.
You state in your job listing that you are looking for someone with strong
writing skills and an attention to detail. Throughout all four years of college, I
worked part-time as a copy editor for an online journal. This job required great
attention to detail in writing and editing. I would love to bring my editing skills
to a position with your company.
These strengths, combined with deep and varied academic, internship, and
employment experience, prepare me to make a strong and immediate impact at
ABCD.
I am excited about the opportunity to join the ABCD team as it moves to the
center of the print media conversation. Thank you for your time and

E. Writing a Resume
The purpose of a resume
Your resume is a marketing tool. It needs to demonstrate:
• That you are employable
• How you meet the job and the organisation's requirements
• That you have the right qualifications and education
• That you have the right experience and skills
• That you have the right level of professionalism for the job

How long should my resume be?

There is no set length for a resume. A resume varies in length depending on your experience and
education. If you haven't worked much before, one or two pages is best, but three pages is okay if
you've got a lot of study and work behind you.
Make sure you don't pad out your resume. If your resume is only one page, as long as it's well-presented
it might get better results than a two-page resume full of unnecessary information.

How should I order my resume?

Generally, it's always good to present the information on your resume in this order:
1. Contact details
2. Opening statement
3. List of key skills
4. List of technical/software skills
5. Personal attributes/career overview
6. Educational qualifications
7. Employment history/volunteering/work placements
8. References/referees
Not everything in this list must appear on your resume every time, and the order can change from
application to application. The most important thing is to get the most useful information across first.
For example, if your education history is not specifically related to the job, put it toward the end of your
resume, behind the information that is related to the job.

How to tailor your resume

Ways that you can tailor your resume include:
• Using your opening statement to link your experience and education to the organisation and the
requirements of the job
• Listing your most relevant key skills first
• Including examples of achievements that meet the advertised requirements of the job
• Including specifically relevant key words and phrases throughout your resume)

What your resume should include

There are a number of things that every resume should have on it.
1) Contact details
2) Opening statement
3) Key skills & strengths
4) Technical/software skills
5) Personal attributes
6) Educational history
7) Employment history
8) References/referees
9) Testimonials

Language Barriers Holding Back Global Science

New research says that language barriers are holding back science around the
world. English is widely accepted to be the language of science, but one-third of research
is not published in English. This means a lot of important research is not seen or read by
scientists and researchers. The research is from the University of Cambridge. Researchers
said important science is being missed at the international level. They said science journals
should publish basic summaries of a study's key findings in multiple languages. They also
said universities around the world should translate their research into different languages,
especially English, Chinese, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
Many international companies are now asking all their staff to communicate only in
English. They hope this will reduce language barriers. The German carmaker Volkswagen
has just announced that English and not German is its official language.VW executives
said the switch to English was to attract employees. The Japanese carmaker Honda has
also announced that all its staff must use English by 2020. Researcher Tatsuya Amano
said:"I believe the scientific community needs to start seriously tackling this issue." He
used the example that important research about avian flu in China initially went unnoticed
by the World Health Organization because it was published in journals in
Chinese.

TIPS To Improve Your TOEFL Score

• Use English Every Day

Set aside time each day to communicate only in English. Listen, read and
write in English every chance you get.
• Write
Make notes for yourself and write down daily reminders, using new words
and common expressions. Practice with emails if you can. This helps with
sentence structure and vocabulary.
• Listen
Listen to music, radio, television, movies and online broadcasts (if available)
in English. The more you listen, the more you will understand vocabulary
and expressions. Music helps you acquire the rhythm and stress patterns of
spoken English. Listen closely to the words.
• Read
Reading is the best way to improve your vocabulary. English-language
reading materials — newspapers, magazines, books and websites — are
always available. Choose your favorites! Try some academic reading
material to prepare for communicating at the university level in English.
• Keep a Journal
Write down things you are doing to prepare for college and other events in
your daily life. This is a great way to organize your thoughts and practice
writing in English. You can track your own progress. Read it to yourself and
read it out loud.

Reading

The Alaska pipeline starts at the frozen edge of the Artic Ocean.
the United States, ending at a remote ice-free seaport village nearly
Line 800 miles from where it begins. It is massive in size and extremely
(5) complicated to operate.
The steel pipe crosses windswept plains and endless miles of
delicate tundra that tops the frozen ground. It weaves through
crooked canyons, climbs sheer mountains, plunges over rocky
crags, makes its way through thick forests, and passes over or
(10) under hundreds of rivers and streams. The pipe is 4 feet in diameter,
and up to 2 million barrels (or 84 million gallons) of crude oil can
be pumped through it daily.
Resting on H-shaped steel racks called "bents," long sections of
the pipeline follow a zigzag course high above the frozen earth.
(15) Other long sections drop out of sight beneath spongy or rocky
ground and return to the surface later on. The pattern of the
pipeline's up-and-down route is determined by the often harsh
demands of the arctic and subarctic climate, the tortuous lay of the
land, and the varied compositions of soil, rock, or permafrost
(20) (permanently frozen ground). A little more than half of the pipeline
is elevated above the ground. The remainder is buried anywhere
from 3 to 12 feet, depending largely upon the type of terrain and
the properties of the soil.
One of the largest in the world, the pipeline cost approximately
(25) $8 billion and is by far the biggest and most expensive construction
project ever undertaken by private industry. In fact, no single
business could raise that much money, so 8 major oil companies
formed a consortium in order to share the costs. Each company
controlled oil rights to particular shares of land in the oil fields and
(30) paid into the pipeline-construction fund according to the size of its
holdings. Today, despite enormous problems of climate, supply
shortages, equipment breakdowns, labor disagreements, treacherous
terrain, a certain amount of mismanagement, and even theft, the
Alaska pipeline has been completed and is operating.
