The purpose of this experiment was to find the molar mass of dichloromethane.

We will be able to
figure out the molar mass of this compound by using the ideal gas law by obtaining the variables
through the experiment to determine the molar mass.

In the Dumas method, he used this relationship to determine molar masses of volatile liquids and this
method is used to determine the molar mass of an unknown liquid composition. In this method, one
sets the experiment up where in the pressure, volume, and temperature of the gas are known. Then one
should solve the number of moles of the gas which are present and another should obtain the mass of
the gas as the condensed liquid. With these data, we can determine the molar mass of the liquid in
grams per mole.

The equation used in this experiment is the ideal gas law equation which is shown below:

PV = nRT
Where P = pressure of the gas in atmospheres
V = volume of the gas in liters
n = number of moles of gas
T = temperature of the gas in Kelvins
0.0821 L∗atm
R = the ideal gas constant:
mol∗K

A volatile liquid can be easily converted to a gaseous state. Vaper is the gas which was formed
in the vaporization of a volatile liquid and it is assumed to act as an ideal gas. If the volatile
liquid is unknown, the use of the ideal gas equation is helpful in determining the molar mass of
the volatile liquid using the Dumas method.
