IIM,Bangalore

■ The all stone architecture of iimb is based on the design of fatepur sikri. it combines the
courtyard of fatepur to the greenery of Bangalore. Bangalore’s climate is very comfortable and
the city is full of lush green lawns and trees., the links between external spaces, and the class
rooms in iimb permit academic exchange beyond the classrooms.
■ The buildings and green areas were a sharp contrast to the more city life outside the campus.
architecture and landscape are not understood as separate elements, rather work together to
prevent the all engulfing concrete city outside the campus.
■ The cluster of classrooms, administrative offices, library, dormitories, the small pockets of
landscapes, and the pubic spaces all seem to be so serenial and peaceful, that the further
you go in, u don’t want to get out.
■ Unlike iima where the public spaces are differentiated from the private spaces , in iimb the
difference between the outside and inside is blurred with the help of three storied never
ending corridors, open quadrangles, and transparent classrooms.
■ System of major corridors for movement along which other activities are connected
■ Within these area between the corridors he created courts for extended activities
■ Indoor and outdoor spaces under pergolas with tendrils of vegetation woven through them
■ No side axis dominated the plan
■ Structure did not dominate the landscape and locally available materials were used.
■ The material was the complete translation into a simple standardized system of
modern construction using in-situ concrete posts, lattice and frames.
■ This delicate vocabulary was combined with a wall system using tough blocks of grey
granite blocks
■ Another important feature of the building is the plan covered façade which acts as
wind breakers and gets mossy during rains keeping the building cool inside.
Neev academy
■ After exploring much of iimb, we visited neev academy, a well known preschool in Bangalore.
The building on seeing from outside didn’t seem like much, just another block building, but
as you go inside you realize it opens up into whole different space. The plan of iimb in a way
correlates with the neev academy plan, in terms of the alternating pockets of landscape
■ The central courtyard and the staircase are lit by the diffused light from the floating roofs. The
school also consisted of many open spaces, flexible for different uses.
■ The public verandah is separated from the inner sanctum of the school by a landscaped water
channel and the transition across is made by a black Kadapa threshold.
■ the entry verandah establishes a lower scale and a distinct place for visitors to congregate.
■ The grid like plan, from which spaces were both subtracted and added to create courtyards,
classrooms, terraces and so on is reflected in both the flooring and the roof. Although the
structure is completely covered by hovering metal roofs, the internal space is still connected
to external landscape.
■ The central yard is surrounded by other spaces of a more intimate scale and overlook
terraces from the first floor.
