Margaret Kalms
Congratulations goes to Margaret Kalms for publishing her first photo book “Life With Endometriosis” on Amazon.
Poignant images of what endometriosis feels like, a photo essay of 17 women who opened their lives and experiences to
articulate the impacts of endometriosis on their lives. Snippets of facts and experiences inspired by quotes from the women
make this book an easy browse. Margaret thanks the women for their courage and boldness in articulating often difficult,
sometimes painful impacts. Margaret’s images say things that are difficult to say in words. They communicate with ordinary
people about the seriousness of endometriosis. Margaret’s goal is that ‘Life with Endometriosis’ will communicate to people
who wouldn’t normally be interested in endometriosis. Women can show their friends, family, work colleagues and managers.
This raises awareness in the community and improves compassion.

Meet your artist
Ingrid Jakobsen
Mid North Coast, NSW
Australia
44
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live.
I grew up in Sydney many years ago and I now live on the mid north coast of NSW. I have always been interested in the arts
but I have not completed any formal training. About ten years ago I joined my local camera club and from that point on pho-
tography has taken over my life. Everywhere I go, my camera goes as well.
My local camera club had monthly competitions, and one section was the ‘’Creative” section. I used to look for inspiration on
the internet and that is when I came upon the Photo Artistry website. I downloaded that month’s magazine ... and it was just
the most amazing and inspirational magazine that I had ever seen.
Inspiration starts with my camera. It can be just the lighting, the serenity or otherwise at the time, the movement of plants,
birds or insects. It is not until the images are loaded onto the screen that inspiration takes over.
I generally start with an idea for a certain image ... but that idea often fades away as I experiment with various techniques. I
enjoy using various overlays on images, or combining images into what I would like to create.
My art gives me inspiration to keep creating. There is always something new to try and learn.
Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how?
Photo Artistry has definitely changed the way I view and approach my work. I feel I am still on the bottom rung of the ladder
but I am very keen to keep learning and going further up.
There are so many talented artists within the Photoshop Artistry group, it would be impossible to choose just one. Every month
I draw inspiration from a number of artists who have had their work published.
Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps?
My next steps are to become more proficient with some camera and software techniques. Eventually I would like to compile a
photo book of my favourite images which I could then give to my family.

Have you ever been somewhere where you wanted a nice “people free” photograph but there always seems to be someone
walking through the scene? This article describes a method for getting that photograph despite there being a constant flow of
people through the scene.
To utilise this method, you will need to have your camera on a tripod because it involves taking a number of images of the
same scene, then combining them together to “remove” the people.
How many images will you need to take? That really depends upon the scene and how many people there are but usually 10-
20 will work, with maybe 30 seconds between shots. It does depend upon the people moving through the scene, if you have
people standing in the same spot for long periods, you will need to wait longer or maybe take more photos.
46
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ...)
Then use the File / Scripts / Load Files into Stack command, the dialog box shown in Figure 3 will be displayed.
Click the Add Open Files button, and make sure the images to be combined are the only ones showing in the dialog box.
Make sure that both the Attempt to Automatically Align Images and Create Smart Object after Loading Layers check boxes are
both ticked and press OK.
Photoshop will now create a new file and will take a few minutes to process the files. When finished you will have a file with a
single layer that contains a Smart Object that contains all of your images in an aligned layer stack.
With that Smart Object selected choose the Layer / Smart Objects / Stack Mode / Median command (see Figure 4), and hope-
fully those pesky people will disappear.
It’s possible, that if you haven’t taken quite enough images, or if the
people were not moving enough, you may still see some ghosts, but you
may be able to clean these up with the healing brushes and clone stamp
tools or content-aware fill.
If you have to shoot at a high ISO, resulting in noise, and you are able to
take multiple images of the scene, try using the above method to remove
the noise. As the noise appears at random positions in each different
version of the image, the median stacking method can do a very effective
method of removing it.

In this interview I have had the pleasure of liaising with Dean Hohn one of the long-time members of our Awake group.
I have also had the pleasure of meeting Dean and his lovely wife Marilyn twice at our Awake catch ups in Melbourne and
Launceston.
Dean is a prolific artist and has done some beautiful work in landscapes, capturing birds and the abstract world.
I remember sitting in a park up in the Dandenongs after a great barbeque lunch all huddled around Dean’s iPad whilst he
shared some wonderful tips for creating his abstract pieces and he was even generous enough to pass on some notes to
everyone.
One of the highlights of the Melbourne trip was taking us to the fantastic site of Print2Metal to learn all about printing our
work on Aluminium which was worthwhile.
So, I decided we all needed to hear some more about Dean and his art and some of the successes he has had in the last few
years.
Dean can you tell us a little of your background and where you hail from and how you came to beautiful Tas-
mania?
I was born and raised in the USA. I graduated from High School in Douglas, Wyoming and joined the US Navy 3 weeks after
turning 18. I was trained as an aviation electrician/instrument technician. I immigrated to Australia the end of February 1978.
Within 2 weeks of being here, I felt I had finally found where I belonged! I’ve been here ever since and have no plans of leaving,
anytime soon!
After first visiting Tasmania for my late wife’s 60th birthday in 2004, we moved to Tasmania mid 2007 for retirement after liv-
ing in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria. We settled in Penguin, which is one of the friendliest towns either of us
had ever found in all our travels around the world.
After my late wife’s passing, I took up the camera and began to learn photography. I met my present wife, Marilyn, as I was
moving into a motorhome to enjoy following the lure of taking my camera to photograph the many beautiful areas here in
Tasmania.
72
DEAN HOHN INTERVIEW (Cont ...)
Having such a beautiful place to create in does this help with finding subjects for your art be it landscape or
abstract work?
I find Tasmania to be a treasure-trove for artistic inspiration! I find beauty everywhere I look. I love the landscape and all it
has to offer. I primarily was a landscape photographer, but one day I stumbled across a location where the rock formations
were like nothing I’d ever seen before. As it turns out, these rock formations were quite special. Staff from the University of
Tasmania Geology Department have carbon dated these formations back 1.3-1.45 billion years to the Nuna era when this part of
Tasmania was connected to British Columbia, Montana and Idaho in North America, before the continents started to split and
the continual drift took place.
While having a play in iPhoto on my new MacBook Pro, I increased the saturation and contrast and was amazed at what I was
looking at! I never knew what I was going to wind up with, but I would look for patterns in the rock structure as a starting point
for a photograph. From there, I would saturate the photos and my love of abstract art developed!
While reading an article in a photographic magazine, I came across an ad for printing on white coated aluminium which made
the images absolutely jump off the page! Shortly thereafter I was asked to display some of my rock abstracts in a local art and
craft show. I had a few images printed and the response to the images was amazing. After the show, I took one of the pieces
(see below) to a fellow photographer who had his own gallery to show him what it looked like. After he had seen it, I started
to wrap it up and he asked me what I was doing? I said I was wrapping it up to take it back home. He said, no, that piece
doesn’t leave here until someone buys it! That’s how I got my start in galleries. Having a unique subject and displaying it in an
unusual way, gave me a point of difference.
I know you take beautiful Landscape photos but equally do amazing Abstract work, how do you split your
time, or do you just go with whatever the mood hits?
I am an individual that gets bored very quickly when something becomes a routine. As a result, I tend to jump around to keep
the inspiration going. I love flower/macro photography as well as bird photography, so depending on the season and what’s
73
DEAN HOHN INTERVIEW (Cont ...)
going on in the garden, can see me jumping from one genre to another, sometimes in the same day!
I am extremely lucky to be living in an environment that is quite varied from white sandy beaches to alpine regions, just a short
drive away. We also have access to one of the worlds largest temperate rainforests along the west and southwest section of
the state. The southwest of the state is uninhabited rainforest.
Do you have any advice for everyone in ideas how to market their work and tips to tackle gallery owners etc?
I am in an extremely privileged position in that I don’t have to rely on the sale of my artwork for a living. Art is a hobby for both
my wife and me. My wife is an oil painter and I do photography and photo artistry.
I am by no means a marketing guru because I don’t have the patience to create and maintain a website, blog and automated
marketing system. It takes up a lot of time if it isn’t all automated, and even then, you have to continually come up with new
content for the site.
When it comes to galleries, I can only share with you what I have done and had success with.
First and foremost, you need a body of work that is unique and gives you a point of difference. Once I had that, which was my
abstract rock art, printed on aluminium, I loaded photos of my pieces onto my iPad as my portfolio. I also had some pieces
printed to show the gallery owners in conjunction with the portfolio.
I then researched the gallery that I thought my work might suit and I wanted to approach. I sent them an email, introducing
myself and my work and asked for an appointment to discuss my work with them. I would front up on the day and show them
an example of my printed work and my portfolio. From there they would say yes or no, my work wasn’t a suitable fit for their
gallery.
My advice is listening to what the gallery owners/managers say. It is extremely important, no matter whether they say yes or
no to your inclusion in the gallery. I continue to learn from them and discuss my work with them. After all, they know what they
can sell, so you need to develop a working relationship with the gallery owners. At the same time, I continue to create work
that is me. I’ve tried creating something requested by the gallery, but I never seem to come up with something that has the
same appeal as my own creations.
How did you discover Print2Metal and do you think having your work printed on the beautiful polished metal
has given your work the edge in the market?
How did I discover Print 2 Metal? I initially used another printing company for some of my abstract rock art pieces. The first
couple of orders were ok and then I received an order that the colour was weak and muted, when it was supposed to be bright
and full of punch. My work printed on metal was one of my main points of difference, so I jumped on the internet and searched
for printing on metal and I came across the company Print 2 Metal in Melbourne.
• Their website stated “Our incredible printing technology makes your imagery stand out with its brilliant luminescence
and vibrant depth of colour
• Archival inks are infused with heat into specially coated Chromaluxe aluminium ensuring a durable and scratch resistant
surface
I rang them up and had a chat with them and explained what had happened with my last order from the other company.

DEAN HOHN INTERVIEW (Cont ...)
I was guaranteed I would not experience that problem if I were to use them. Just speaking with Print 2 Metal on the phone
gave me the confidence to give them a try. When I received my order, it well and truly exceeded my expectations.
What started out as a business relationship has turned into a friendship as well. I can’t speak highly enough of the profes-
sionalism of the whole team at Print 2 Metal. They treat your art as if it were their own! If it isn’t perfect, it doesn’t leave their
premises.
I can’t necessarily say it gives me an edge to have my work printed on metal, but in a group show with other mediums, acrylic,
oil, etc., my work definitely stands out and grabs your eye. Depending on the subject matter, I have the option of a matte,
semi-gloss or ultra-gloss finish. Prints from Print 2 Metal are ideal for wet areas, public areas and the like of Dr’s. surgeries,
because they are UV resistant, scratch resistant and washable!
Wow so thanks very much to Dean for agreeing to chat to us and fill us in on everything that is happening with him. I’m sure
everyone will agree it was hugely interesting.

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live.
I am a retired Police Officer, having served in the New Zealand Police for 36 ½ years. As part of our retirement travel plans we
intended basing ourselves in the UK for a year and exploring Europe. Eleven years later we are still here living in Putney,
London. We have two grandchildren in London and three in Wellington so travel back and forth to keep in touch with family.
As I approached retirement I attended a seminar in preparation for my next life experience. It was stressed not to retire and
vegetate to the couch. We were encouraged to take up new mind challenging hobbies such as art, learning a new language or
playing a new instrument.
I had always been fascinated with photography recording family events with my Kodak compact. There was nothing artistic
with my images. The subject was always plump in the middle of the frame! On retiring and learning of the various techniques
through adult education courses and photo clubs I started being more adventurous with my photography and exposed to the
world of Lightroom and Photoshop. This led me to Sebastian Michaels and his courses. I was totally absorbed with Sebastian’s
inspiration and the mind blowing work of his students. I joined the Photo Artistry family, and while working at a much slower
rate than other students, I am enjoying improving my artistic abilities under Sebastian’s course mentoring.
Following the works of fellow students on social media and the various magazines published in association with Sebastian’s
courses fills me with enthusiasm and creative ideas. Seeing the achievements of others gives me the inspiration to have a go
outside of my comfort zone.
I like experimenting with my images, adding textures, overlays and backgrounds, and then enhancing them further with crea-
tive apps. I always use my own images, textures and backgrounds and have started creating my own overlays.
Continually challenging my mind to produce new work at the standard set is absorbing and adds to my mental alertness and
wellbeing. In this regard my art equates to my overall good health and the ability to enjoy my retirement career at full pace.
Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how?
Definitely. Before starting Sebastian’s courses I never had an artistic bone in my body. I could never draw or paint at school.
My initial photography experiences saw me finishing organised photo walks way ahead of others and taking far fewer pictures.
On debriefing the walk and seeing what photos others had taken I questioned whether we had been on the same walk. I had
simply walked passed numerous opportunities as I hadn’t seen the ‘picture’ in it. I was amazed at what I had been overlooking.
My horizons were extended further with Sebastian encouraging the taking of backgrounds and textures to build a stock library
for creative composite art.
Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future ? What are your next steps?
I realise I am at the very start of my artistic journey and have a tremendously long way to go with a lot to learn. I strive to be
more proficient with my composites, showing them in exhibitions and entering competitions. I am very proud to be part of
Sebastian’s artistic family and look forward to continued advancement with him, fellow students and colleagues.

Art of Birding
2019
Arrange a still life scene and photograph it compellingly. Try to tell a visual story that links each element
- though it doesn’t have to be an obvious one. Don’t be satisfied with your first photo, try different angles
and settings and explore the scene. Advanced challenge: include memento mori to represent the transi-
ence of life and feel free to use Photoshop compositing and photo-artistry techniques to turn your still
life into a work of art.
Do you get frustrated with photos that are either overblown in the highlights or have no details in the
shadows? Extend the dynamic range of your photos by exposure bracketing to take multiple photos
with different exposures, then combining them in-camera (if your camera does that) or externally in
Lightroom or Photoshop either manually or by using the inbuilt features. Most cameras will have an
exposure bracketing setting that will automatically take the set of photos at each exposure value. A
tripod will also come in handy.
Find a region where two ecosystems overlap and meet the locals, e.g. the littoral zone at the beach, an
estuary, wetlands ...
This is when we bring it all together. Think of the skills you’ve developed this year and create a photo
essay of 5-10 photos, related by theme or topic, and use it to advocate for something you care about.
Feel free to use photos you’ve taken this year or take new ones. Aim for a consistent look-and-feel
across the photoset, while ensuring each picture contributes uniquely to the story. How to present
your essay? Possibilities include designing an Adobe Spark presentation, Instagram story, YouTube
slideshow with sound track. Make sure to tell the world about your essay through social media posts
etc. Advanced challenge: arrange to print and exhibit your photo essay.

Photographers’ Photos from October 2019 Challenge
Up before the sun rose over the mountains on our Alaska trip, I knew there
wasn’t enough light to capture the birds in flight, so I did a slow pan. This
isn’t something that I remember to do often when photographing birds, but
I’m going to have to try it more often!

A couple of lionesses had killed a kudu bull, and after devouring most
of it, they wandered away to snooze it off. That left the carcass - so next
in line was a pregnant hyena, who claimed it from 2 jackals and a whole
lot of vultures. There were a couple of other birds of prey also waiting
their turn in a nearby tree... truly everyone was in for a treat ( if they ever
got a chance!)

WATER FROM ART
by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the
Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about
their plight and decided to do something to help.
It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs
on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no.
The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a
commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation.
My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at
https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw
I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad
to discuss it with you.
The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown,
please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order.
I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future.
