BY: Tayzia Stark

STANDARDS:
RF.4.4c: Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading
as necessary.
Students will read an excerpt from Roald Dahl’s The BFG and use context to figure out
the meanings of words and how to apply this to other difficult words. Then, they will fill
out a worksheet determining whether the words have a positive or negative meaning.
OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to
1. Read an excerpt from The BFG.
2. Learn how to use different types of context clues.
3. Determine whether the made-up words have positive or negative meanings.
SUPPLIES
1. Pencils
2. Worksheets
3. Power Point
STEPS OF LESSON
1. Introduce the topic
a. Today we’re going to use part of Roald Dahl’s book, The BFG, to:
i. Read words we have never seen and determine whether they have
positive or negative meanings.
2. Read the passage and discuss
a. Ask the class, “What do you do when you come to words or phrases you
do not know?” Talk about using context clues from the story. Read the
beginning of the passage and do the first word on the positive/negative
worksheet together. Discuss how we came to this conclusion.
b. Watch a clip from The BFG movie, showing the way he speaks in our
reading. (1 minute)
3. Check for understanding—Worksheet
a. Split students into small groups to discuss and complete the worksheet
together.
b. Go through the passage again as a class, pause on unfamiliar words, and
ask for volunteers to tell us whether they put it under positive or negative
and why.
