DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN GENERAL MATHEMATICS

(FIRST GRADING)

Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of functions.
Performance Standard:
The learner is able to accurately construct mathematical models to represent real-life situations using
functions.
Learning Competency:
The learner performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition of functions.
(M11GM-Ia-3)

I. OBJECTIVES
The learner
Knowledge: identifies the rules in operations on functions;
Skills: performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and
composition of functions;
Affective: develop accuracy in performing operations on functions

II. CONTENT
Operations on Functions

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide Pages: TG for SHS Mathematics, pp. 14 - 22
2. Learner’s Material Pages: LM in General Mathematics, pp. 13 – 20
B. Other Learning Resources
Activity sheets, Powerpoint presentation, pen, cartolina

IV. PROCEDURE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNERS’ ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings
“Good morning students.” “Good morning, ma’am Maxcs.”
2. Prayer
“Before anything else, let’s start the class
with a prayer. May I call the prayer leader
in front?”
3. Checking of Attendance
“Class secretary, is there any absent in “None, ma’am”
the class?”
“Great!”

B. Engage

“Okay class, you will be divided into four

groups. I will give each group an activity
sheet, a pen and cartolina.

The goal is for you to share your ideas and
collaborate to solve each item. Recall the
past lessons. Write your answers and
solutions on the cartolina. You will be given 5
minutes. After answering, each group will
choose a representative to present and
explain your answers. Are my instructions
clear?”
“Yes, ma’am”
“You may start now!”

“You were able to solve each item. What “Operations on fractions and operations on rational
topics did you recall to solve them?” expressions”

“We’ve already discussed about functions.

What are functions again?” “Functions are relations where each element in the
domain is related to only one value in the range by
“Very good!” some rule.”

“Now, What can you say about these

expressions?”
P ( x ) +G( x ) “The first expression is the sum of two expression or
P ( x ) /G(x ) functions. The second is a quotient of two functions.”

“I asked your opinion about these

expressions because our lesson for today is
about adding, subtracting, multiplying and
dividing two or more functions or simply the
Operations on Functions.”

C. Explore
“On your notebook, try answering these. You
will check your own paper after so do your
best to answer it yourself. The goal is for you
to assess if you can or cannot solve this
problems. I’ll give you 10 minutes to answer.
Any questions? If none, you can start now.”

Use the functions below to find the following.

f ( x )=x +2
g ( x )=x 2+ 4
[Solutions on the last pages]
h ( x )=5 x+ 3
Determine the following functions.
1. f ( x ) + g ( x )
2. g ( x )−f ( x )
3. h ( x )∗g ( x )
4. g ( x ) /f ( x )

“Ten minutes is up. I’d like to have 5

volunteers to write their solutions and answers
on the board.”

Check their answers and explain.

D. Explain

“Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing two or more functions together will result in another
function. Dividing two functions together will also result in another function if the denominator or
divisor is not the zero function.”

“Here’s the definition of the operations on function.”

E. Elaborate
Present the following problems to the class. Let them work in pairs for an allotted time. The call a volunteer
of two to discuss the answers.

1.

2.

F. Evaluate

Use the functions below to find the following.
