Midterm Review/Synthesis Guide

Below you will find a list of important people, pieces, and concepts that we have studied in the course
so far. The goal of this guide is to help you to organize your thoughts on the content of the class up to
this point. This should help you to review what we have done so far as you prepare to write your
midterm paper. For each item in the list below, you should be able to

a. Explain its significance in the history and philosophy of music, and

b. Explain how it is related to any other item in the list. That is, for any pair of items in the list
below, you should be able to explain how the items in that pair are related to one another.

We will discuss this material in class on Tuesday 10/8, and this discussion will be much more effective
for you if you have started studying the items on this list before our class meeting.
