COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. ME321.CEO.1: To recall the basics of Fluid Machines
2. ME321.CEO.2: To summarize basic thermo-fluid dynamics flow equations
3. ME321.CEO.3: To construct the velocity triangle of for different turbo machines
4. ME321.CEO.4: To examine the different performance parameter of turbo machines
5. ME321.CEO.5: To select the Turbo machines for an required application

COURSE OUTCOMES:
The students after completion of the course will be able to
1. ME321.CO.1: Classify the different turbo machines.
2. ME321.CO.2: Determine the force exerted by fluid on rotating elements of turbo
machines using thermo-fluid dynamics equation.
3. ME321.CO.3: Solve the turbo machines problem by using their velocity triangles

THEORY:

Unit I Impulse momentum principle and its application 6 Hours


Classification, Euler’s turbo machinery equation, Applications, Impulse momentum principle
and its applications, Force exerted on fixed and moving flat plate, hinged plate, curved vanes,
series of flat plates and radial vanes, velocity triangles and their analysis, work done equations,
vane efficiency.

Unit II Hydraulic Turbines 8 Hours


Classification of hydraulic Turbines, Pelton, Francis, Kaplan and propeller turbines, velocity
triangles, Alternate form of Euler’s turbine equation, Degree of Reaction, utilization factor,
Relation between degree of reaction and Utilization factor, power and efficiency calculations,,
draft tube, Design parameters for all the three turbines

Unit III Steam Turbines 8 Hours


Stream nozzles: Types and applications
Steam turbines; basic cycle, impulse and reaction turbines, compounding of steam turbines,
Parsons’ turbine and its condition for maximum utilization factor, reaction staging, velocity
triangles and analysis

Unit IV Pumps 8 Hours


Centrifugal Pumps: Introduction, classification of pumps, Pumping System and the Net Head
Developed, Centrifugal pump components and their functions. Euler Head, various efficiencies,
Need of priming, Pumps in Series and Parallel, Calculation of NPSH (A) and its significance,
Effect of blade discharge angle on performance.

Unit V Centrifugal compressor and Axial compressor 6 Hours


Centrifugal Compressors: Components, Work done & pressure rise, enthalpy entropy diagram,
Slip factor, Power input factor, various losses in centrifugal compressor
Axial flow Compressors: Work done, and Pressure rise, Degree of reaction, losses and
efficiency, Stalling.

Unit VI Jet Propulsion 4 Hours


Propulsion Cycles: Jet Propulsion Cycles and their Analysis for turbojet, turboprop and turbofan
