Ce Ulrott A time.- ^/
in 1830 in fact, in the village of Odense, Denmark, there lived

a village cobbler called Hans Christian Andersen. The stories

v

he loved to tell were so popular with the child-

ren that they stayed away from school to listen
to them. The authorities decide to banish Hans . *"-..] \

from the town, but before they can do So,

he leaves for Copenhagen at the suggestion of

Peter, his apprentice, who later follows him.

--zv,z/Z%i//ZzV)%i%%/./z/%'"
ln Copenhagen, the cobbler is arrested
for climbing a statue to attract trade.
Peter escapes, taking refuge in the stage

a man asking another where a cobbler can

knows a cobbler and Hans is bailed out of prison
and taken to the theatre, where he is com m issioned to make a
special pair of shoes for the Ballerina Doro. Hans falls in love
with the girl on sight but unknown to the cob-
bler, the dancer is happily married to, although
always quarrelling with, the Ballet Director, Niels.
Hans, who thinks Doro is very unhappy, writes a
love letter to her in the form of a fairy tale.
During the night, Peter gets up to read the letter --,W-' '',,zzt/tzt

but a breeze blows it out of his hand and the nore eW/Z/zzz'

sails through a window of the theatre.

Peter tries to retrieve it, but it is retained by the
doorman as it is addressed to the Ballerina. The
note is handed to her and Peter admits Hans
wrote it. She reads it and concludes the
cobbler has written a baltet. Petef, who has
realised that the couple are happily married,
returns home and tells Hans the girl has his
note. The cobbler rushes to the theatre only
to find the Ballet Company has left town for its
annual tour. Hans resumes his habit of telling
stories to the children. One of his tales is printed
by the father of a young boy to whom Hans has
told the story of the Ugly Duckling, henceforth
Hans has a career as a writer. The theatre com pany /////////////,//:

returns and on the opening night Hans' ballet is presented.

Hans goes tothe theatre with a gift for the Ballerina,
but her husband refuses to let him see her. When
Hans persists, he is locked in the property room.
Next day the Ballerina wonders why Hans missed

what happened. She sends for Hans and soon realises
he is in love with her. Her husband enters and
kisses wife. The truth dawns on Hans.
h is Back at
his house he finds Peter has
packed and gone. Hans also
leaves the city, and on the
road to Odense he catches
up with the boy and tells him he has
finished with story telling. Peter tells
the cobbler he will always tell
stories because he cannot help him-

self. He is right. Back at Odense,
everyone tu rns out to hear h is tales.
