1. Civil Rights Movement: A long-lasting movement in which many people would


protest in order to grant African Americans the basic rights they deserved.

2. Sit-ins: A form of protest in which people would silently sit in places like
restaurants and hotels.

3. Freedom Rides: Volunteer African Americans would ride public buses into the
deep south where they would get beat.

4. Martin Luther King: One of the great leaders of the Civil Rights Movement who
advocated for peaceful protest.

5. Letter from Birmingham Jail: A famous letter written by MLK from his jail cell.

6. March on Washington (1963): Largest public protest march, led by MLK. This
was where he gave his famous "I have a dream" speech.

7. Civil Rights Act of 1964: Prohibited discrimination in employment, schools,


hospitals, all public places. Also banned discrimination based on sex.

8. Voting Rights Act: Allowed the government to oversee voting in the places
where discrimination was common.

9. Hart-Celler Act: Got rid of discriminatory immigration quotas and allowed Asians
to immigrate into America.

10. Great Society: The name for LBJ's plan for domestic policies.
