EM 211 – Strength of Materials


Assessment: Written examination (60%); Continuous Assessment (40%).
Objective
To discuss the basic mechanical principles underlying modern approaches for design of various
types of structural members subjected to axial load, torsion, bending, transverse shear, and
combined loading.
Course Outline

1. Introduction

i) Definition, subject relevance and units convections


2. Normal Stress and Strain
ii) Direct stress and strain. Sign conversion.
iii) Strain stress diagram, elasticity and the elastic modulus
iv) Factor of safety and material selection
v) Graphical representation of forces, stress and displacement diagrams
vi) Statically indeterminate problems in normal stress
3. Shear Stress and Strain
i) Planes subjected to shear
ii) Bolted and wielded joints in tension
4. Other Stress applications
i) Poisson’s ratio and thermal expansion and stress
ii) Pressure vessels and stress concentration
- Thin walled pressure vessels
- Stress concentration in tension
5. Moments of inertia in Plain figures
6. Torsion in round shafts
i) Shear stress
ii) Angle of twist
7. Beams
i) Beam loading and reactions
ii) Simply supported beams
iii) Overhanging and cantilever beams
iv) Shear and moment diagrams
8. Stress in beams
i) Bending stress in beams and steel beams
ii) Shear stress in beams
iii) Allowable load
9. Statically indeterminate beams
