Kriging

Kriging is an interpolation method

„ Does not attempt to reproduce the variability
„ Accounts for both distance and directional weighting
„ Exact, unbiased interpolator
„ Minimizes estimation error
„ Uses model of spatial continuity

Kriging Properties

Why use it?

ƒ Produces the best local (block) estimate

ƒ It is B.L.U.E.
ƒ Best (minimization of the error variance)
ƒ Linear (like others)
ƒ Unbiased (weights sum to unity - like others)

Cross Validation

A procedure to check the compatibility between a set of

data, the spatial model and neighborhood design.

ƒ Consider each data point Zi in turn, temporarily suppressing it

from the data set.
ƒ Re-estimate it from the surrounding data using the covariance
model.
ƒ Compare the re-estimated values (Zest) to the true values
(Ztrue) and compute the Re-estimation Error (RE = Zest - Ztrue).
ƒ Calculate the Standardized Error (SE = RE/skrig).

7 Wells
To demonstrate early stage development we simulated the early development
of the North Cowden Unit using the actual order and location of the wells
drilled. The first seven wells drilled were used as the initial data, and a simple
map of porosity has been constructed using a standard computer mapping
algorithm. As expected, increasing detail is seen as additional wells are drilled.
Subsequent figures depict the map of porosity after 14 wells were drilled and
finally, 55.

Kriging, Well Density, and Soft Data …

Geosciences, LLP

The Markov-Bayes approach to collocated cokriging is applied to the data set consisting of
seven wells and the seismic data. The relationships described are used to calculate the
variogram of the primary data and the cross-variance between porosity at the wells and
acoustic impedance. The results using 7, 14 and 55 well solution are shown. Recall that
the wells used in each case are consistent with the order in which they were drilled.

Advantages of (Co)-Kriging …
Quantitative
Geosciences, LLP

„ Kriging is an exact interpolator (if the control point

coincides with a grid node).

„ Minimizes the Mean Square Error.

„ Uses a spatial model to bias the interpolation process.

„ Creates the most-likely out come (P50).

„ A robust technique (i.e., small changes in model

parameters equals small changes in the results).

„ Can help answer the question: Where is the best next

well location?

52
Limitations of (Co)-Kriging …
Quantitative
Geosciences, LLP

„ (Co)- Kriging (like all interpolators) produces

smooth images of reality.
„ Short scale variability poorly reproduced.
„ Does not reproduce the total variability of the
phenomenon.

„ Requires a spatial covariance model, which may be

difficult to infer from sparse data.

„ Kriging variance:
„ Only a relative index of estimation reliability in
different regions.
„ Can not be used as a true estimation of kriging error
(i.e., smaller nugget or sill gives a smaller kriging
variance).

53
Review Questions …
Quantitative
Geosciences, LLP

„ What is the difference between Kriging and

Collocated Cokriging

„ What are some good examples of using

Collocated Cokriging?

„ What happens to the variance in Kriging if the

sill is increased? Decreased? Why?

„ What is the impact of the Nugget on the kriging

estimate?, the kriging variance?
